Why has my direct traffic gone down?

So before the redesign of a client site, they were seeing approximately 1900 (85% unique) visitors via direct traffic. After the redesign, we've seen an unbelievable spike in traffic, but the direct traffic has gone down tremendously from the 1900 to about 350 visits (80% unique). While we're seeing great results, it just doesn't make sense to me that it has decreased. Any thoughts?

Sometimes such ranking drops could be temporary issues and in other cases the matter could be due to the key terms losing importance online.

Maybe you have lost some good backlinks and your search engine rankings have gone down. Not updating the content of the site could be another possibility.

This happens a lot of time and with a lot of people.. just wait for some time and you will the same results in upcoming time. Let the site get indexed properly.

As per my view that it's not considered with search engine but the thing is that you need to wait because it's matter of Google dance.

two possibilities here

You are stepping back or your competitors are gaining the edge.

Check the backlinks to see if they are still working their part!

Instead of waiting, keep on link building and promoting your site in order to bring back its traffic and PR>

You might have lost some quality backlinks
Or may be because of Google Dance
What ever it may be, keep on doing link building for your site.
My suggestions are Social Bookmarking and Article Submission for your site..

Perhaps you over optimized your site, you have to consider everything like keyword density and prominence. Plus, you should review your Meta's. Check your on-page and off-page optimization so that you will know where's the root of the problem.
