Try to keep your URL short and easy to remember.
Try to include your main keyword too!

Do you mean the domain name?
Get a short easy to remember domain name related to your niche.

If you're looking for a good domain names, you should select a keyword that describe your site. Probably, short domain is already pick up. IMO, It's okay to have a long tailed keywords up to 15 letters to 18. But be sure it easy to memorize and really describe your site.

It should be short, simple and should carry targeted keyword and even category. So when the keyword and topic comes together, it helps to rank higher in search engines.

Sometimes something confuses me is, is it okay to design different url rather than including the title of article? any advantages or disadvantages?

When building a CMS, you might want to do a couple things in terms of URLs:

(1) Restrict the length of the URL to something normal
(2) 301 Redirect any duplicate URLs to the real URL

Google Says, Long URLs May Hurt You.

If you are referring to sub-pages use hyphens between meaningful keywords in the page name (don't use too many words).

Maximise is on the right pathMaximise is on the right path
The shorter the better.
Keyword based URLs are better than "dirty" URLs.

E.g.:

http://www.maximise.ie/about-seo - GOOD
http://www.maximise.ie/page.aspx?id=...f-ba064abc29d1 - BAD

URL should have "-" hyphens rather than underscore. Use keywords in URL like category and other keywords.

Should have? Would please provide me more specific reason why - better than _ for permalink usage?

Used to be some webmasters believe a myth that using pipe in title tag is not good for SEO. But in this video, Matt has broken the myth

In my opinion, when you use http://www.YourDomain.com/keywords-here, SEs will see "keywords-here" as two separate words.

However, if you use http://www.YourDomain.com/keywords_here, SEs will see your "keyword_here" as only ONE word.

So, as far as I am concerned, you should build your URLs as the first case.

Tip: Do you see any websites belong to Google using "_" in their URLs?

it doesn't matter, Mr. Cutts has stated that both are treated the same although he suggest hyphens.

google will see a -, _, and . as the same thing
I like hyphens, but in google's eyes, it's all the same

ps.. the dot as a sub-folder example.. if you use a subdomain, google will see it as a different site.. example.
my.site.com isn't the same as site.com
but site.com/my.site is treated the same as site.com/my-site or site.com/my_site

hope that clears things up for everyone

Just start from the user experiences' point of view, the underscore requires u to push two keys at the same time, while hyphens don't!

As per my view that

if you are taking about domain name then you can do some proper research and then you can go with domain name.

if you are taking about url of your web pages then you can go through Url rewriting process.

Hi,

I think the following things should be kept in mind while naming your site:

1. It should be short and easy to remember.
2. It should be supported by your targeting keywords.
3. It should be relevant with your services or products.
4. Avoid hyphens, underscores etc.
5. Prefer .com domain.
