Mr. Cutts has stated that both are treated the same although he suggest hyphens.

google will see a -, _, and . as the same thing
I like hyphens, but in google's eyes, it's all the same
ps.. the dot as a sub-folder example.. if you use a subdomain, google will see it as a different site.. example.
my.site.com isn't the same as site.com
but site.com/my.site is treated the same as site.com/my-site or site.com/my_site
