Is SEO even worth effort in some cases?

If your getting or expected to get - let's say around 100,000 visitors per day, would you bother working on SEO to get an extra 30,000 visitors per day? (the time, the effort, the money etc) or would you let your top spot for the chosen keyword build up over time in the hopes that every smaller site out there will link to you?

Depends on the value of a click. BlueFind maintains a very good profit-per-uv ratio, so it's worth it to spend money advertising it and promoting it, whether that be through SEO or other avenues.

But most forums don't make enough money to justify the cost of promoting them.

I don't think the forum/site will be worth the effort - I'm a strong believe in building the brand name but ... Just as one of your articles said "Pets.com spent millions on advertising pet food,why would someone choose to buy it online when they can go to the store) ... but then again you spent alot of money advertising v7n forums right? - and I guess it was for the pleasure of building a large community and not the for $$$?

I haven't really spent all that much money promoting the forum. I've spent a lot of time, though, and I did that as a hobby more than as a business decision.

I think i won't spend much time or money on SEO until I am offering a product in that case.

if you are doing something you really like then it should do well. you don't need a product if you really like what you are doing and are willing to put in enough time effort and money to dominate that marketplace.

It seems as though it would be worth the effort to do internal SEO to begin with. Traffic grows exponentially and if your growth is as fast as you say it is, then much of this is word of mouth. An extra 30,000 could become an extra 90,000 6 months from now and if that's when you offer your product, then you are appealing to a much wider audience to start with.

Additionally, if you offer a newsletter, it pays to get as many people signed up to that as soon as possible. Not only so that you can notify them later, but to sell sponsorships sooner.
