Are You Using Directories In Your Link Building?

Are you still using directories as part of your link building strategy? Or are you like as the author describes, focusing your attention on blogging and social media properties?

Quote:
Most people agree that social media properties such as blogs and bookmarks are invaluable for search engine optimization link building efforts. In fact, it would be pretty difficult to build decent, high-traffic links without some sort of social media being drafted in. However, this enthusiasm for blogging and the like has come at the cost of directory submissions which were once a large part of an SEO’s inbound link arsenal....

...The waning popularity of directory listings actually makes them a smart choice for link acquisition...

well, i think directory submission is still helpful as long as you're getting quality backlinks using this strategy.

I still use link directories sometimes, but not as much as I used to. Quite frankly since Google hammered them down, traffic from directories is gone and backlink power too, even from the best directories.

That's what happens when they change the rules in the middle of the game.

I don't see that ppc marketing sites (the majority of which are less than useful and are no more than paid links) with high PR differ from directories, but they are not penalized.

How many of us have ever experienced as a customer those marketing sites which did not return what we were looking for? I bet a lot. How many of us have seen marketing sites steal our contents and indexed in search engines? Well that's happened to me.

I find that search engines lack the quality that they claim to have, because indexing these sites is very deceptive in my opinion.

You should choose quality web directories, specially if it's human edited and not automated. I still submit my sites on web directories and own a couple of them and I've never read any article saying that web directories are no longer effective for link building strategies.

Well I'm still submitting to directories, but not like what I used to in the past. Directories for me no longer provide traffic, just backlinks. But they're still backlinks!

Directory Submission is still an important part of link building as long as you are submitting to quality ones and not to those link farm directory sites. Only a few are of great quality and is human edited, so getting an inclusion is pretty hard.

Directory submission is the simplest and link building way and as long as you are doing it in proper manner it plays significant role in enhancing the ranking of the website.

My honest opinion: there are more than 2000 directories available on net today, out of wich few are Free, rest of them have minimum $1 charges if you want a one way link, instantly approved link.
if you are looking for free submission in these directories the approval takes more than 2 months, and most of them dont get approved. so i think it is nothing but a sheer waste to try free links from these directories

I would strongly argue that it is not the simplest way to build one way links - you just need to look around for the newest ways to build them....

I find the best way to drive quality traffic is to submit articles to relevant sites. These articles drive more traffic than simple submitting your site to hundreds of lists.

[Removed]

There are many other sites that would love to have you submit content and its free. These are the highest quality backlinks.

No. I gave up on directory submitting. Most directories add nofollow, some cloak links with javascript and so on. I don't have enough time to check if their listings are ok.

I'm still submitting in directory. I submit 10 to 15 link everyday. And That's not hard. It's really easy to submit. I'll stop it if I cannot see any result..

Some says that Directories are getting obsolete and ineffective strategy when it comes to seo. But I think if you know the right resources and place to submit your listing, it would still be useful to ranking. For me, it's still a great source of one-way link.

Submitting to DMOZ should only be done once. There's this guy once here in this forum that said his site got included after 2 years of waiting.
