It feels a bit out of place to post this here. With so many young directories announced here, Gimpsy is practicly a dinosaour!
Nevertheless, I am quite sure that some of you may be curious to know how we are doing. For one,

Seriously though - we did rather well this year, as I will demonstrate shortly. Before that - a short ramble. While innovative in almost every aspect, Gimpsy is highly traditional when it comes to its core values. We believe that we exist to assist the searcher, much in the same way that Yahoo was created to help fellow surfers to find sites on the net. It is for this reason that Gimpsy took more than 18 months before going live. We wanted to be able to offer an excellent service to the searcher, or the surfer, and we wanted to have enough sites in our database to be able to do so. Gimpsy's mission statement is to
become the definitive guide to the virtual world. Our 'clients' are those surfers who are coming to Gimpsy to
find good sites.
How well did we serve them? To start with, during this year we had a massive take up of user registration, currently exceeding 6,400! The only incentive for registering is to have enhanced search experience - and many people just love it. In addition, our logs indicate a similar number of people bookmarking the site - every month!
People come to Gimpsy for one purpose - to find sites. And so they do, with a vengance, nearly 1.5 million times in the last year. When we hear people say, as they often do nowdays, 'nobody is using directories to search for sites', we can only say 'that's not our experience'!
Site owners registered at Gimpsy also had a very good year. Not only they received a large number of referrals, but they were assured to be picked up by crawling search engines. Gimpsy has about 425,000 pages indexed by search engines, among the 10 top directories in the world (see table at
Strongest Links). Hovering between PR6 and PR7, a backlink from Gimpsy shows up for many sites - and in a prominent position (check
this, for example).
We also got some good press, culminating in the publication of a detailed interview with your humble servant in
search engine watch. It's not surprising that we get thousands of free submissions, and a healthy number of paid ones, that would rather pay than wait the 4 months minimum delay before being considered.

Gimpsy Second Anniversary
Interesting concept of a directory, though. I came across it myself about 4 months ago, and I'm sure I did a free submission @ that time... should be interesting to see if it shows up eventually.
