I would say the most important ones to start off your site are.

1. If it is a local site with an actual address to hit the yellow pages index and local city hall sites.

2. If not address, Articles are always a good spot to build your site page rank up.

I also prefer do follow forums and blog commenting rather than writing and submitting articles - but article marketing still works well

However, a lot of the article directories are now "nofollow" - so they only send traffic now - also they have far too many rules and regulations
