Mike Grehan's "Filthy Linking Rich" is an especially good article.

I see your point but IMO its not the same thing. A site can stop voting for a page by removing the link... sure the smaller websites don’t usually do this but the large organisation websites will do?

It seems to me that this paper he referenced: http://oak.cs.ucla.edu/~cho/papers/cho-bias.pdf from the researchers at UCLA is a more worthwhile read as it's more to the point.

I think another problem for new sites like mine is that even if you do have more inbound links compared to a old competitor the older site can have thousands and thousands of pages compared to my 500 and so I just cant rank high enough and will always be behind no matter how many inbound links I get.

I would also highly recommend reading Mike Grehan's " Search Engine Marketing: A best practive Guide". It's currently in a second edition, but the third edition is due out very very soon. It really goes into the algorithms that search engines use, and general advanced SEO theory based on the maths. Great stuff, and kept simple for the layman, too.
I put up a review here:
http://www.platinax.co.uk/seo/review...h-engine-book/
and really do recommend any commercial SEO's to read it - if they haven't alerady.

Not if I was paid through paypal... You'd net like $700,000, rather than $850,000.... big difference there. :-p
I just bookmarked this thread... invaluable, thanks for the info.
