Depends on the directory or article site. An authority directory website is better in terms of backlinks and actual visitors than an article on a small site. Similarly, an article on a reputed website would yiled much more benefits than a directory with a never ending list of links.

But, assume that you are looking at an article directory and a website directory both with the same PR and amount of traffic. Which would you post to first?

An article involves the reader and gives an idea what the site that submitted it may be like. A directory with a limited amount of outgoing links also gives some sort of an assurance on the quality of the site. So, all things being equal, it would be both in their own rights.

However, because directories these days have simply too many outoing links, it gets difficult to get noticed. Articles on the other hand always rule due to their uniqueness and would be noticed much better.
