Benefits of DMOZ listing
I got my first site listed in the DMOZ directory two days ago. As I am still new to this, just wondering how soon I will see the benefits of this listing as far as SERPs/PR are concerned... Thanks.

Boy DMOZ is tough these days. I remember when it was just a matter of days to get listed.

I list good sites in about 1-4 days depending on how much crap spam, pop up, virus ridden sites I have to go through in order to find a gem.
Saying that I still have my own portfolio site that’s still not listed after 3 years.
Its questionable if Dmoz listing has much benefit… your best being more active in the community (blogs, forums, submit articles, more internal pages, link exchange etc… )

It is a very positive action what you have done registering to Dmoz. It is one of the biggest directories. Unfortunately it takes some time before you could see any real results, you r question was how long it might take, there is no specific timeline, but judging from my experience I could say that it normally take from a few days to a few weeks, rarely more than a month or so. Good PR however takes longer than that and is not only associated with listing your site on a major directory.

Hi, I've been on page one of DMOZ for two years now, and it has helped a great deal, I am fully aware that you should never post anything negative about other forums but I feel sorry for the Editors and Mods in the DMOZ Forum because all they ever seem to get is 'when will my site be listed'

A DMOZ listing is one of the best things you can do in terms of getting quality backlinks. DMOZ powers at least 50 other directories, including the Google directory, all of which have good PR. And you know that Google thinks it's a quality site, because they use it to power their own directory, and links from what Google thinks are quality sites are always good to have. Generally takes a few weeks for all the DMOZ-powered directories to pick up your listing though.
And if you've been waiting a long time to get your site listed in DMOZ, consider applying to be an editor. It's a good way to give something back to the web, IMO.

Hi, I think you will find that if you become an editor and then get your site listed you get banned pretty quickly. We have been doing this in another forum, and one guy quit being an Editor for the abusive e-mails he received. Yes DMOZ is essential for your listings, but submitting threads on forums is giving something back!

Personally, I think it is a great benefit to be listed in DMOZ. There are quite a few directories out there that get thier listings straight from DMOZ. Might be getting many quality incoming links for the price of one. However, you can have a successful site without being listed in DMOZ.

As long as you're not cooling your own site, or refusing to list competitors' sites, then you shouldn't get banned from DMOZ as an editor. (As long as your site meets DMOZ's guidelines for listing, then you're allowed to list it.) Many editors of many categories have their own sites listed.
Submitting threads on forums is also a great way to contribute to the web community.

Although, DMOZ is the best directory ever, it is getting pretty tough to get your site listed there. Unfortunately, some of the directories do not have editors and it can take you months to be listed there.

Hello Angela and welcome, I have put that point direct to a DMOZ editor, they say that they are swamped with new applications. I suggested that they do what cinema's do and go multiplex, in other words sectionalise into DMOZ 1, 2, 3 and so on. They are quite institutionalised over there, and are not really interested in new ideas. There are two sites to do updates on DMOZ they are
http://www.resource-zone.com

Good luck

Its NOT essential for your listings at all. We all have plenty of successful sites not listed in Dmoz doing well. You get no more ranking boost than any other directory with the same PR. As for the “50” or so other directories using it I don’t think Google counts them as back links because of duplicate types of pages filter - You only have to do a back link check on a dmoz listed site on msn search and then compare it to Google to see how good Google can filter.
Threads on forums provide very little or no benefit after a site achieves a certain relatively low level presence (unless your Aaron Who spends his entire life on web comunities to promote www.seobook.com).

Johan007, I dissagree, if a site submission to DMOZ is successful and you get a page one listing it should show up on Google. If something works and it's free then of course it is essential. Backlinks from forums, sure it's not going to page rank you 8 by simply posting on them but we all know that surely? I am not certain on your point on '50 other directories' I have not posted that.

>4000 other sites use DMOZ database (many have not been updated for a long time) ... a lot do show up as backlinks on Google for my site.
