Earliest Search Engine

Who is the earliest Search Engine? Was the page rank concept working at that time?

Google invented PageRank, so the question about the earliest search engine is unrelated really.

Here ya go,
Web search engine history says 1993 Aliweb.

Quote:
The name "PageRank" is a trademark of Google, and the PageRank process has been patented (U.S. Patent 6,285,999). However, the patent is assigned to Stanford University and not to Google. Google has exclusive license rights on the patent from Stanford University. The university received 1.8 million shares of Google in exchange for use of the patent; the shares were sold in 2005 for $336 million.

I guess the earliest Search Engines we used were the computers at school libraries
We key in an inquiry to a library computer to search books and articles.

Aliweb was the first one, but it wasn't very popular. The first really popular search engine, I think, was Web Crawler. The first one's I ever used were Web Crawler and northern light.

The first Search Engine was called Archie(cool name huh?) in 1990 by Alan Emtage. But as someone mentioned above me the first "google" like search engine was Aliweb. Hope this helps!
