This is a very interesting question and most the people like to know, I also don't have much idea about it.

Google supplemental results. You don't show up in the organic listings for a period of time while they determine if you are spammy or not.

Actually sandbox is the effect or a penalty by Google. It applied by Google and temporarily reduce the page rank of new domains and placing it into what they called sandbox. This happens when search engine optimizers attempt to manipulate Google's page ranking to bring sites into top. Sometimes creating lots of inbound links to a new web site from other sites that they own is one cause of it.

But there is a reversed sandbox that exists where the new pages with good content and without inbound links are temporarily increased in its rank. Its like a new released book in a book store that are displayed prominently to encourage buyers.

Sandbox is basically testing results to watch particular website or webpage reacting in search results.

This is the place where Google puts on new sites till it ranks them. I think it's unfair a little bit, but nobody can prevent it.

Hi there! The Google Sandbox (a.k.a. Sandboxing or the sandbox effect or the Google penalty):

Quote:
a name given to an observation about the way Google ranks web pages in its index.
For newly created websites, since they do not yet appearing in SERP, has no inbound links, content is not yet crawled or the site is not yet rated, they are sanboxed.

the sandbox effect, Google temporarily reduces the page rank of new domains, placing them into what is referred to as its "sandbox", in an effort to counter the ways that search engine optimizers attempt to manipulate Google's page ranking by creating lots of inbound links to a new web site from other web sites that they own.
For penalized sites, you get into the sandbox for violating Googles' guidelines.

The Google Sandbox - it is an acts set as a probation for new sites, they added a filter to the Google Algorithm to reduce spam or probably to discourage spam sites from rising quickly, getting banned, and repeating the process.

Tons of books could be written on the Sandbox subject because millions of people are arguing that it exists and millions are swearing that it is a myth or something imaginary but one thing in all of their talks is the same and will remain so and that is concerning the newly launched sites, they need to wait for some months.
