How important is having different IPs for each site

I have 5+ sites that are currently using a shared IP, what kind of an impact would it have if they each had a unique IP (in terms of linking to one another)

I'm by no means an SEO expert, but it seems pretty clear that a unique IP cannot count too highly. I say this because many (if not most) hosting services utilize virtual domains on common servers. For example, the server of my domain hosts 256 other ones, all unrelated to me:

* http://whois.sc/r0k.us

It would not make sense for search engines to penalize sites just because they happen to be served by the same hosting company.

I think thats incorrect. Because to my understanding if you have 5 sites with the same IP and they are linking together.. its all the same as inner-linkage.. but if you have unique IPs for each, then it would be concidered outside backlinks.. which is much more weighted then inner-links..

can anyone confirm this?

I think it has to do with different C class IP addresses which are more benefitial than different IP addresses within the same range.

If the sites are related (same topic) then I would link, if not I wouldn't regardless.

I think it's a generally accepted idea that links form the same IP are devalued by the google algo. From my experiences this is true. I have several hundred related sites that I link to each other, all from different domains but the same IP. For competitive keyword phrases, these links are almost ineffective.

However, for non-competitive phrases they work very well. I've been able to rank in the top 10 for some less valuable keywords very quickly using lots of backlinks from the same IP. In general, you're better off with 20 backlinks from unique IP's than 500 from the same IP.

If they are from the same class C block, does google have the same weight on them, then if they are from different blocks?
