Google seo vs Yahoo seo?
I don't understand Yahoo seo at all.
I made a lot of pages which rank in top 20 on google but same pages rank about 200-300 in yahoo.
what can be the reason?
Completely different seo rules apply to yahoo?
what I am missing?

The main reason for your problem is that Yahoo simply Lacks AI. Yahoo's current algorithm is even worse than what Google had 5 years back when accuracy of the search results is considered.
As against Google, Yahoo considers On-Page Optimization the most and disregards the concept of backlinks and gives it a low priority.
Authority and Age play a Massive factor in Yahoo's ranking. So as to be ranked well, according to Yahoo's Trustrank theory you need to have a good number of authoritative backlinks pointing to you, you're on-page seo should be good enough and your site should be old enough for high competitive keywords.

Generally, if you follow the guidelines of Google it will help you in the other search engines. There are a couple of exceptions where you have to add additional things. e.g.: - Yahoo! uses the meta keywords tag
Quote:
|
...Use a "keyword" metatag to list keywords for each page of your website. Use distinct lists of keywords that relate to each specific page on the site. Do not use one broad set of keywords for the entire site...

- Bing isn't supporting canonical tag yet as of this writing:
Quote:
...Bing says it’s still working on supporting the canonical tag on a single domain, and suggests webmasters should rely on other means to manage duplicate content....
...Despite its planned support of the canonical tag, Bing says webmasters should essentially use it as a last resort.
“Our first and foremost advice is the same as it always has been: 301 redirects and good site design should be the primary focus of webmasters, with canonical tags picking up the slack when technical limitations impede other solutions"....

The basics of seo are supposed to be the same, but there seem to be differences in how the engines interpret what we interpret as 'search engine optimization techniques'. In your case, that is the prob because in google you are achieving top rankings but not in yahoo (rank 200-300 in yahoo). As yahoo places more importance on on page optimization you should improve your on page seo efforts to get ranked highly in yahoo also.

I agree with Snak3. so you should put emphasis on on-site optimization and don't build too many cheap back links but high quality back links. that's the key.

There are some different techniques in google & yahoo..
But you should try for yahoo answers & submission in yahoo paid directory for yahoo SERP.

Generally speaking I'd rather spend my time optimizing for G and then hope for the best with Y. Heck, I'd rather optimize for Youtube then Yahoo.

This is why you need one method of optimization which will work for all search engines. The truth is that your site will not rank the same on all of the search engines anyway, no matter how well your site is optimized or linked.

Yahoo is more on on-page, so you must also focus on your on-page optimization and provide good content for your site.

Man, my case is worse than that. One of my site was in #4 in Google but #50+ in Yahoo and even in Bing, I am able to get #5.
I did many works, every kind of promotion and other SEO methods to get ranking in Yahoo but the answer is Zero.
Now, I am eagerly waiting for Bing's hand in Yahoo SERP. I am waiting for the agreement to come into the practice. Yahoo still a mystery to me..

It's really difficult to pinpoint the exact factor used for their search engine ranking but from what I understand, mostly they put focus towards on-page seo and age of the domain. So far, I've rarely come across a site that ranks well for the same keyword for the two different search engines. It's either one of them.

It's kind of sad, but if you get listed in the yahoo directory this will help your site rank a little better in yahoo, not much but it does help.

For me in overall traffic yahoo only gets 10% of the traffic, 10% from other search engines, while Google gets the 80%. I have no basis for my estimation, it is just my point of view.

For Yahoo the exact match keyword in the domain name is more important, for Google the backlinks and anchors.

I personally don't bother with Yahoo SEO anymore. Yahoo is going to keep losing marketshare over the next few years so I put all my efforts into google and bing.
