Anne the tags are terrible
It is good practise to incorporate your main keyword into the title tag.
The description tag should be around 2 sentences long and explain the content of that page. This should also incorporate your main keyword(s).
The keyword tag is a waste of ink.
I like to think of tags like a short index for a book.
The big mistakes are
People copying tags
Only having one set of tags copied throughout the whole site
Not incorporating keywords into the tags
Wasting time on keyword tags when they are pointless
Using more than 65 words including spaces on the title tag
Keyword stuffing the description tag.

This is true, unique description tags are good as search engines use them as copy for your listings. However it is title tags that need to be fully researched as these have SEO benefit.

I am now having the meta tags and description tags changed on the home page - if you have read my other post, the issue with Google is now resolved, it was nothing to do with my site but in the process, my site will be now much improved as a result.
Oh to see Google on my site was a beautiful moment.
Thank you for all of your help and fabby advice!!!!
Anne

Hi......
Meta tags is the Meta-information (information about information) that is associated with a web page and placed in the HTML but not displayed on the page for the user to see. There are a range of meta tags, only a few of which are relevant to search engine spiders. Two of the most well-known meta tags are the meta description and meta keywords; unfortunately these are ignored by most major search engines, including Google.
thnx

A meta description tag is a brief summery of your whole website.
A Meta Keyword tag is list of all your important keywords.
The limit to meta desc tag is 170 char.
While adding meta keywords, add only those keywords which are going to appear in your body text of page.
Thanks

My extensive research, and after being lambasted in another forum for refuting the absolute value of Meta tags, I have come to the conclusion that they have about <2% of importance to a sites ability to rank in the SE's.

Yes I can, but I'm not going to place a high value on your Meta tags.
