placing meta tags like title & description are one way of promoting your site. you you have a bad name & description on it. for sure no one will bother clicking your site.

For me use meta tag in your website, don't worry if your competitor steal your keyword, it's your skill how to be on top....

Does Google likes metatags

Some SEOs say no but I think different if you look at your description tag.... and Sign in your google webmaster tools and if you have a missing or short description it is listed as being an error ....

On highly competitive keywords title and incoming links aren't enough to rank you will need all onpage factors to get that placement I've seen that the difference in description can be the difference between a slot or two up especially when every competitor has ten of thousand incoming links a good title and inurl match.

Dont use keyword meta tags, they have no use any more. Make a proper title to get the visitors to click your link in the SE`s.
