All our sites our TOP on Google!!

we've finally managed to do it:

search for accountants leicester - our accountancy site is top
search for financial advice leicester - our financial site is top
search for software support leicester - our IT firm's site is top
search for funny accountant jokes - our jokes site is top.

None of the sites were appearing on the first page of google then last week we added a descriptive paragraph and hey presto this week they're all appearing when a search is done on our main favoured keywords.

hey they also appear on yahoo and other main search engines too!

all the hard work has finally paid off!! I think a payrise is in order here!

Congratulations. Now try to get on top for "accountant jokes" as well

I'd change the title on accountantjokes.co.uk to begin with something like Accountant Jokes, since the first words of your title are most important and accountandjokes.co.uk is not a keyword you have to target.

Congratulations mate. Its good to see it all coming together.

When you say a descriptive paragraph, do you mean at the top of your page, under like the top bar.

I really think a lot of people completely overlook optimisation for the local market - you've done a good job there. As you develop and grow, you can then set your sights on the national market.

Warning...

It is awesome you are on top! BUT... Beware...
Ive worked for 4 years on a particular website that suddenly became very powerful in google, topping the charts in many categories.
Just be thankful if anything that you are ontop this month.

I was all excited that I was topping the charts in my country, when suddenly approx 24hrs ago my site totally vanished (deleted from their directory).

As fast as you get to the top, you can be deleted by the press of a button.

My suggestion to you is while you are top in google for your search words, forget about google now and aim for the other search engines.
Continue to submit to them however, but try to optimize in other directories as well.

Good luck, and I hope you stay ontop for as long as possible!

OK. My question is - it it better to have just your keyword in the title?
eg
<title>Blue Widgets</title>
or
<title>Blue Widgets by John Smith Widgets Co</title>

I have reasoned that the former is superior because with the latter, the keyword density is diluted. Am I right?

I have also read somewhere on the board that there are reasons to believe that it works better with the 1st letters capitalised - again any comments?

At the moment we just don't know. Titles seem to have taken a bit of knock though not as big a knock as link text. Just don't overdo the searchterm targeting for now, and try using some 'related' words and phrases in all the usual on-page and off-page elements.
