SEO Tip of the Day - Jan. 9, 2012 - The Value of Site Search Data

Todays SEO Tip is as follows:

Quote:
I challenge you to think of creative ways to start to use your data to make better SEO decisions. Data for search can come from a number of sources, webmaster tools, web analytics, auditing tools, and more. One of the most powerful sources of insight I find is site search. Think of it as an opportunity for refining what your customer is truly looking for.

Insights from Site Search

As much as SEO is focused on driving traffic I believe there is a greater responsibility on search teams to focus beyond driving traffic and focus on delivering a customer experience. When the search engines talk about “Quality Content” you can actually measure “quality”. A few key measures of quality are:

SEO Tip of the Day - Jan. 10, 2012 - SEO Efforts Don’t Have to be Dead on Arrival

Any business owners on this forum? Check out this blog post.

Quote:
Most of us at one time or another has viewed the television commercial of the older women who has fallen and can’t get up.

Well, for some business owners, they probably feel that way sometimes about their company’s SEO efforts. The intent may be good, but the bottom line is the search engine marketing campaigns their companies are employing are on a fast track to nowhere.

In the event your business falls into that scenario, there are things to look at and review as to why that is the case.

SEO Tip of the Day - Jan. 11, 2012 - 7 Quick Tips to Keep Your SEO On Track

The week is half over.

7 Quick Tips to Keep Your SEO On Track in 2012

Quote:
Once again, we've rounded the corner on a new year and many of us find ourselves re-evaluating our performance throughout many of life’s facets, whether it's how much we exercise or how well we eat. Just as we would to continually yearn to better ourselves, we have to take a moment and reevaluate what we’re doing to continually achieve within organic search visibility.

Taking a look at your overall SEO strategy from time to time is a great way to slow down, breathe, and see if you're still on track for SEO success. Any long-standing effort in life deserves an evaluation from time to time.

No SEO success is realized without solid benchmarks. It's important to continually compare progress to past dates to assess improvement.

A new year provides a great point to review year-over-year data to get a big picture of SEO success without the rigors of seasonality and other factors that can mar short-term analysis. Beyond assessing numbers and percentages, it’s also a great time to...

SEO Tip of the Day - Jan. 12, 2012 - KISS SEO

For a webmaster trying to find his or her way into the realm of SEO, it can seem overwhelming to grasp all that is comprised by Search Engine Optimization (SEO). For those, here's a simple, yet comprehensive SEO plan:

• Research the search terms your target audience uses often to find businesses like yours;
• Create compelling content on your product and industry – keeping those keyword phrases in mind;
• Mark up that content in an SEO friendly fashion, using heading tags, page titles (the #1 onsite signal), anchor text in navigation, etc.;
• Make sure your website is accessible, user friendly, and has a site map;
• Monitor position on keywords, traffic and conversions. Adjust content where indicated by metrics;
• Seek relevant inbound links from quality sites with targeted anchor text;
• Customize your business listing on Google Places; and
• Add new quality content regularly.
Boiled down even more simply: keyword research, content that reflects those; links to your site. Rinse and repeat.

For a more indepth look at the issues, you might read this thread from the beginning. I also like this SEO Checklist.

SEO Tip of the Day - Jan. 16, 2012 - The Art of Driving Content: Speed vs. Quality

Yikes, we forgot to update this thread.

Hopefully this blog post will motivate you a little.

Quote:
When you rush into things you tend to overlook details that matter. Like riding a motorcycle 90 MPH into a city and failing to notice the large pothole rapidly approaching, trying to race through SEO is the quickest way to get hurt.

We were on a tight schedule earlier this year, when my team launched a major project we had quickly put together in less than a week. The topic we were targeting was trending and we knew that the content we had created for it was killer, we were certainly going to gain attention and, more importantly, links by launching the project. We were proud of the project and the quick work we had done on it, so we launched without much editing or reviewing our process.

Then the comments started coming in.

Viewers of the project weren't noticing the minute details we had put into the work, what they were noticing was the typos that had slipped by us unnoticed. In our race to get this brilliant piece of timely content out and into the world, we had failed to notice the small bumps in our path: misspellings, extra words, the usual copy problems. Our viewers noticed and so did the big G. We didn't...

SEO Tip of the Day - Jan. 17, 2012 - 7 Panda-Punishing Content Mistakes

Tonights SEO tip is as follows.

Quote:
The Google Panda update has definitely changed the SEO landscape. In a great short video Rand explains how it changed SEO best practices forever. SEOs are now responsible for:

■ Design and user experience
■ Content quality
■ User and usage metrics.

In a way your job has been upgraded to web strategist. In the past you only had to worry about generating content. Now you have to worry about generating high-quality content.

Fortunately Google has shared plenty of clues on how to do that like encouraging us to think like engineers who ask these 13 questions to generating SEO friendly posts.

That’s great for the future, but what about the content that exists on your site now…the content that you created based on the old algorithm rules? If you don’t fix it, Panda could hurt you.

Here’s what you need to look for and how to fix it..

SEO Tip of the Day - Jan. 23, 2012 - SEO Monitoring Tools and Tips

Good morning. It's Monday and i call it lazy Monday.

Got a little blog post for todays SEO tip.

Quote:
In the real world, things go wrong. While we might all wish that everything we did was "fix once, stay fixed", that's rarely the case.

Things that were previously "not a problem"(TM) can become "a problem"(TM) rapidly for a variety of reasons:

• someone changes something unrelated / without realising it would impact you or just screws up (e.g. deploying a staging version of robots.txt or an old version of a server config)
• the world changes around you (there was a Google update named after a black and white animal a while back)
• the technical gremlins gang up on you (server downtime, DDoS etc.)

In all of these cases, you'd rather know about the issue sooner rather than...

SEO Tip of the Day - Jan. 24, 2012 - Six Ways To Recover From Link Spamming

This is a good SEO tip to share with your friends.

Dealing With Bad Links: Six Ways To Recover From Link Spamming

Quote:
Linking between sites can be an effective approach to building online traffic by improving your visibility in online search results. It's a common tool used by SEO specialists hired to elevate a website's online profile, and almost every website can benefit from using linking strategy in some form or another.

Unfortunately, not all links are good, and some can be detrimental to your website's online reputation. This is the case with too many websites: they pay good money to have SEO experts build links with other websites, only to find out later that the links are coming from spammy websites that are easily outed by Google. This can lower your online visibility instead of improving it, and fixing the problem isn't always easy. Removing links can be a difficult process for two reasons: first, because you may not have the...

SEO Tip of the Day - Jan. 25, 2012 - Google Penalty or Algorithm Change:

Tonights SEO tip of the day may answer a few members questions.

Google Penalty or Algorithm Change: Dealing With Lost Traffic

Quote:
There is nothing worse for a webmaster/site owner than to wake up one day and find Google Armageddon has taken out all of their site's rankings and traffic. In most cases, mayhem ensues as they scramble around to try and figure out what happened or if they have run afoul of the mighty Google in one way or another.

This framework should help you keep your head should the unthinkable happen.

Sadly this topic really isn't written about a lot, or discussed (go figure; peeps don't want to public talk about a smackdown) so let's get into some of the issues surrounding this particular, often poorly understood, phenomenon. We'll also look at some preventative measures that we can all keep, just in case.

SEO Tip of the Day - Jan. 26, 2012 - SEO Short Cheat Sheets

Don't tell anyone about this Cheat sheet that i'm going to post.

Quote:
1. Keyword Basics:

The most important thing with keywords for your website is that you have to begin the process with proper research. Take advantage of free tools and services at your disposal such as the Google Adwords tool, and consider paying for more advanced and detailed programs.

Remember that keyword density is a thing of the past, there is no density you should be opting for. Instead, focus on natural inclusion of your targeted keywords, working them in where possible without doing it excessively.

Google Keyword Tool – google for “KeywordToolExternal.”

Note: The fastest results are seen in targeting a larger number of lower level competitive terms.

2. Create Great URLS:

There are many steps that go into creating great URLs. Starting from the beginning, you should...

SEO Tip of the Day - Jan. 27, 2012 - Moving content? Think 301, not rel=canonical

Moving content? Take a look at this blog post.

Quote:
Whether you've decided to move your website to a new domain or you're moving content within a current website, it's important to know how to protect the trust value your current content has with the engines. Over time, links get built, content ages and acquires trust. You don't want to walk away from that if you can help it. Why start over when most of that value can be transferred to the content's new location?

The solution to your problem is the 301 redirect. This redirect is referred to as the "permanent" redirect. Its cousin, the 302 redirect, is the "temporary" redirect. Basically the 301 tells us to please follow the link to find the new home for the content. The 302 on the other hand, tells us the content has moved temporarily, but will return to its original location. Since, in this example, we know you've moved the content permanently, the 301 is the redirect you should use. We've covered this in more detail in a past post.

One big questions folks often have at this point is how much of the value is passed to the new URL. A valid question, and one with a simple answer. Most of the value is...

SEO Tip of the Day - Jan. 30, 2012 - Anchor Text Distribution:

This is a good blog post to read. Going to make it the SEO tip for today.

Quote:
The ‘over optimization’ of anchor text has been coming up a lot recently in conversations that I have been having and has been the subject of a few recent blog posts. For the sake of this post and to quell any arguments stemming from the phrase ‘over optimization’, I am, for this post, defining the term as: building too many links with targeted anchor text such that they a) no longer provides value or b) actually takes away value – basically you’ve built too many targeted links and you’re not seeing your rankings increase.

When I have talked to people about this recently, I have suggested that a 7:3 ratio of non-targeted: targeted anchor text would be a good frame of reference for emulating a ‘normal’ link profile. I got curious about this though and decided to do some research. I looked at product and category pages on ten different websites - these websites are all large national and international brands/ecommerce sites that are well linked to. Between the ten sites I analyzed the anchor text associated with 28 category pages and 31 product pages.

For each of these pages, I downloaded the...

SEO Tip of the Day - Feb. 2nd, 2012 - Are Your Titles Irresistibly Click Worthy

Todays SEO Tip has to do with titles. Check out the blog post below.

Quote:
The 80/20 Value of Titles

Recently, Rand did one of the best Whiteboard Fridays I've seen in a while (I do watch all of them) about increasing the likelihood of your content going viral. He touches briefly upon the importance of your title for click through rate and sharability, but in this post I'd like to take a more in depth look at titles and how they help spread your content. (By the way, this is my first YouMoz - woohoo!)

In my opinion, the elements of writing click worthy titles deserve more attention. In the wonderful marketing book "Made To Stick", the Heath brothers note that any good news or editorial writer may spend 80% of their time crafting the title (or "lead") and then whatever time they have left on the body of the content.

For those familiar with 80/20, what this means is, the size of the title compared to the actual content (and time spent crafting it) disproportionately affects the success of that content. It's one small piece of text with a lot power!

Note: to clarify, I am not necessarily referring to the title tag exclusively. I'm referring to simply the title of a page, post, article... which as you will...

SEO Tip of the Day - Feb. 6th, 2012 - Do This, Not That: SEO Content Edition!

If you are nursing a hangover from the super bowl then grab a cup of coffee before reading this.

I’m sure you’ve seen those handy guides in magazines that tell you to eat 13 pretzels instead of 100 M&M’s or taco pizza instead of taco salad. This is like that, only less delicious. (But reading, like celery, has negative calories!)

Here are a few ideas to help you a) use your time more efficiently and b) get out of a content marketing rut.

Target a Competitive Keyword with a Video, Not an Article

Unless you are lucky enough to write for a very authoritative domain, it’s pretty difficult to rank anywhere near the first page for...

SEO Tip of the Day - Feb. 9th, 2012 - SEO 101: Getting the Right URL Structure

Today's SEO tip is brought to you by Michael Gray.

On my list of top 5 problems I encounter when doing client work, the number one problem is poor URL structure. In this post I’ll go over the basics, how to get it right, what are the most common problems, and how to fix them.

URL Canonicalization

While this may sound like a big fancy term, what it basically means is that your content needs to have one URL and only one URL to be most effective. For example, a website could have identical content on each of these URLs, yet search engines would consider them as different pages:
