MSN & Yahoo with bad results compared to Google
Recently, I have been getting great results for all my inner pages on Google. But only my homepage gets decent results on MSN, and I am getting almost nothing from Yahoo. Any ideas as to why? Is it just simply because of inbound links? Or could it be something else entirely?

The rankings do seem to be getting more and more different - I see Yahoo improving and Google sliding. See http://www.seo-search-engine-ranking...es/001234.html for one example.
Naturally it will be a combination of things with inbound links and their anchor text the most important factor. I also notice that Google ranks internal pages better than the others (generally speaking). If it's a new site, that may be why only MSN likes your homepage. I'm #1 for health message boards on MSN but nowhere on the other two - it's a new site.

Thanks James,
Interestingly, I was just about to post a question about buying text links, and noticed your sig link. Cool site. Does it help you buy text links from relevant sites?
Also, what do you think of link brokers? How about http://www.textlinkbrokers.com?

The blog doesn't help me find links to buy but it forces me ot keep up to date with the text link ad market. In that sense it helps me know when I'm looking at a good deal so yes it helps me buy text links.
I'm selling a few links through textlinkbrokers but when I want to buy so far have always found better deals working directly with publishers. Makes sense since they don't have to charge more to make up for the 30% commission.
By the way if you're looking to advertise the two sites in your sig I can probably help. With a Giants football blog and an SEO blog, not to mention the web directory, I have some experience working with ticket brokers and web developers and helping them advertise their sites.

My movie site’s internal pages suffer unbelievably badly on MSN though the main menu pages are fine. They suffer so badly even forums and random blog pages out rank them.
On Google my internal pages are very good and appear against very good pages.

Don't know of any proof except that more inbound links are the answer to most any ranking problem.

But in MSN's case I don’t think this is a guaranteed solution. It’s difficult to explain unless your like me and have a site whose internal pages suffer very badly. I would have a wiled guess at either:
1. Over optimisation (I don’t think I do this)
2. Older pages penalised (hmmm maybe)
3. Link structure - pages linked off from the homepage or linked off from top level page with few links have a much greater chance of ranking. Pages linked off from a top level page with many links do NOT count much in the rankings.
...I guess the key in my experiance is no 3, but it could be something ales.

I'm out of my league here. I never worried much about the internal pages ranking on MSN though as MSN becomes more popular I suppose I'll have to start. The original question was about a homepage on Yahoo and Google.

This is interesting, I have the exact opposite problem for yours. My site ranks decently well in Yahoo and MSN (thought it still has a ways to go), but doesn't rank at all on any terms in Google. Google also only shows 3 backlinks to our site, compared to 70 or so for both Yahoo and MSN. Wish I could figure out what's causing the disparity.

Lorven,
Google doesn't show all backlinks. They used to only show higher pr page backlinks, but now they seem to just mix it up. They probably are counting many of them, you just can't tell. MSN's spider has been very active since coming on-line and is pretty fast at finding and caching sites and the links to other sites. Yahoo has been slower, but may be improving lately????
