http://www vs. http:// ??

I have been told that http://www.domain.com is always better for SEO than just http://domain.com. I was hoping that someone could explain why this is the case and explain the disadvantages of submitting a URL with only http://.

Thanks for any info ----

O

Because most people link to a site with "www". If I was recommending your site to somebody, or mentioning it on my site or forum, I would use www. If you have concentrated on getting http:// into the search engines, then my www links wouldn't be much use to you.

both are treated as seperate pages when calculating back links, so it is important to use exclusively one of the other

www. is a subdomain. it does not necissarily have to be the same thing as the non www version.

you also can use .htaccess to automatically redirect one to the other. likeso:

AddType text/html .shtml
AddHandler server-parsed .htm
AddHandler server-parsed .html
AddHandler server-parsed .shtml
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^search-marketing\.info
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.search-marketing.info/$1 [R=permanent,L]
