Keeping up with backlinks?

I was wondering how you guys keep up with what backlinks you had made for what sites that you link for.

For instance, I have bettermefree.co.uk and I have made some 400 backlinks. Well now I have paydayloansrightnow.com and about three more sites that I am doing for someone else. So I am making a huge list of all the sites that I have tested that FOR SURE allow backlinking, but all I know is that the sites on the list allow backlinking. How do you guys go about recording what sites you have left backlinks for where?

I just keep them in a file and then see where I have put all the links. But in fact I usually remember all the places.

make different files for each client. as you put a link on a site, mark it submitted.
some people use software to manage these tasks better.

I would like to add a important thing to the discussion that Google doesn't provide any weightage to the back links you might have had seen that every now and then the back link count keeps on decreasing and the time you work hard on it then only it will increase this is but obvious but if you research a bit you will find that the sites with even no back links rank good on Google which shows that back link do not have that importance. So don't worry about tracking the back link s concentrate on the quality and the relevancy of the links
