Now I will say that I am not a Google expert, but after watching quite a few videos done by Matt C. I can say that any attempt to lower your competitors website within the SERPs is black hat which is unethical. Luckily Google and the other major search engines recognized this problem and made it so a bad press release or terrible links won't actually hurt a website. They won't help, but you can not derank a website unless you own it and are able to modify the robot.txt.
