do irrelevent backlinks with good page rank help in gaining rankings i am asking because i have seen some of sites which have gain ranking due to irrelvent but high page rank links.

Yes they do. They aren't very effective but they do help.
I build a mixture of relevant and irrelevant links for my sites and i've been doing very well on the SERPs.

One thing that i've noticed is that irrelevant High PR backlinks boost your rank on Bing 3x more than that on Google. Bing somehow lacks a relevancy testing algorithm which probably makes even irrelevant links from blog comments, etc.. look natural to it.

Im sure that they do help, but not to the extent that a link from related niche and in context with your subject, would help.

So a link about sharks PR5 on your blog about Pepsi will not help as much as a PR3 link about soft drinks would help.

That may be simplified a bit and people may debate it, but it is my opinion and nothing else

Yes, it's something like that I would have thought (and since none of us work for google then we'll never know). At some point there will be a point where a related PRX blog post > an unrelated PRY blog post but no-one knows what the specific values of X and Y are.

As far as I know, link relevancy is does not matter when it comes to SEO. The only things that matter are: anchor text, do follow links and PR....that's it!

These backlinks can help you to get better pagerank of course. But they can not help you to get higher position for your niche keywords.

Generally speaking, all back links from decent sources with correct anchor text would be helpful for SERP purpose while dofollow back links would be helpful for PR purpose.

Yeah, I agree with them! I also tried it to my past clients and it was really effective.

It will definitely boost your Page Rank.
As for as the ranking is concerned, if it has keyword as the anchor text then it would be helpful. (It's my personal opinion).

Well you can not say they don't matter at all. Atleast on Google it does!

High PR Irrelevant back links are not so much effective from Google point of view, but in some context it also helps to you to boost your website

If you think about it, SEs are trying to mathematically quantify natural human interaction. I like to think of it as a cocktail party. Commonly you go with people from work and begin the night with them discussing your industry. Then you spread out and begin to talk about other things, but still all the while you are networking for your primary business. Every now and then someone important will pull you away and introduce you to someone and naturally you go. I think that natural networking is what SEs are trying to mimic. So high authority unrelated sites would carry good weight and would be expected just as long as they aren't all of your links.

I agree that Anchor text, do follow links and PR does matter, but relevancy works more.
