Read somewhere awhile back that you gain nothing rank-wise by using tiny-URL....
Think it had something to do with the spiders not following those links...
(Not 100% sure...just in the back of my mind)....

I recall seeing link shorteners (maybe tinyurl, maybe something else) coming up on Alexa backlink reports. However, Alexa is pretty much irrelevant. I'm pretty sure, based on logic alone, that google won't pay any attention to it since it's so easy to spend all day making shortened URLs to your site to get a free (and easy) backlink.

You want one that does a 301 redirect to the real url.
URL Shorteners With 301 Redirects

Quote:
How does bit.ly work?
bit.ly works by issuing a "301 redirect": a technique for making a webpage available under many URLs. When you shorten a link with bit.ly, you are redirecting a click from bit.ly to the destination URL. A 301 redirect is the most efficient and search engine-friendly method for webpage redirection, and is what bit.ly uses. Because bit.ly doesn’t re-use or modify links, we consider our redirects to be permanent.

That is a redirected link and will have no effect in seo, those are not counted as backlinks.

If they use 301 redirect, the value of these shorted URLs will be juiced to your domain and in other cases i think they can't help your ranking.

for your site to have a good PR, you must have a large URL, so It means for me short back links are useless.

I don't think that tiny URL is useful for high PR rather it helps in remembering the domain name so that the people can learn it easily.

A shorten URL is a redirect link, it's function just to short your url for 140 character box of social media. Maybe give your traffic but don't influence to your PR directly.

Tiny url is a redirect link.It has been told that tiny url doesnot list the true url and can be used by the spammers and may even link to unexpected sites. But it is usually recommended to anyone who shares links on the major social networking sites like twitter and so on..
