At the same time, the long-term benefits depend on the skills of the contestants and the persistence of the backlinks once the contest ends (Actually there's very little risk considering the dollar amount)

I disagree. I think that SEO is more of a professional practice now than any time in the past. In the past, SEO was nothing more than simple Google bombing. Nowadays you have to pay attention and spend more than a couple hours reading SEO forums to understand search engine optimization.

Like you John i also disagree with this, i think SEO is more fun these days as well but i think that google will also not be the best search engine in some months to come, i have a good fealing that MSN will be
