I thought it's about time for a link building strategies thread. Contribute your ideas - how you get links. I'll post mine, too.

Deep links from quality sites. If you have webmaster friends with content somewhere related to yours, get connected. Example: You have a site about real estate in Chicago. Write up a page about the area and have local Chicago sites link to that page. have realtor sites link to a site that is about real estate in general. In my experience those links work great. They can also generate pretty quality traffic, so it's not all about the search engines

Sounds like it's worthy of it's own thread.

My first step is the easiest - web directories. There are tons of free ones and cheap ones. And even if they use scripts that don't pass PR, I still submit to several free directories. (About 150)
A great list:

I'll post more on this topic tomorrow.

I do that too, submit to tons of directories. I also get tons of natural backlinks only for being unique and giving people a way to grow and use Cannabis Legally.

Funny thing: giving outgoing links to sites with good and related content to your own does help your site for linking to it as well. At least I have come to that conclusion. Do you guys agree or disagree on it?
My motto is this: if I don't provide all of the content myself, I link to someone who does and then get them to help me out somewhere else in return. I believe that web surfer are much rather an extra click away from what they are looking for than not finding what they need.

Use the nature of the internet as a community as a link building technique - if people work in similar areas, you meet and get on with them, they may be more inclined not simply to link to you, but also refer people to your sites.

I am convinced that the fastest way to increase natural incoming links, is to provide people with something they WANT to link to. Provide the kind of site that they WANT to tell their site visitors about. (articles, free services, quality content, quality blogs, etc.)
I have a couple of articles on my site that may be helpful to someone.

This works well on niche sites.
A good way of getting links is first to have a useful quality site targeting
1 country, then create a quality page about the same product or service but
in another country
Have a look around for people in other countries who deal with the same product and have quality sites and add a link to their site from their country page.
Don't even tell them about it, but instead get 5 or 6 of your friends to
click the link once or twice a day for a couple of weeks.
(They will soon find their link if they use referer stats)
After a couple of weeks, email them complimenting their site, tell them you
have a similar site but only target one country so are not in competition and
ask if they would like you to send them the traffic related to their country.

There is nothing better than seeing in your stats referrals from sites that you don't even know of. They link to your site/forum because they like you
That is IMO what Google looks at, that sites which are not linking to just anyone .. are linking to you
