Linking from free sites
what are the penalties for making sites on angelfire or freewebs, that are nothing but links to your site.

i'm not sure what that means.....
but to clarify, what i get penalized if i made several pages on angelfire/freewebs (free web site services) with the sole purpose of giving my main site that i pay for, links, and therefore page rank and so on.
i.e. an angelfire page with loads of links that have keywords, related to my main site, and linking to my main site, and my main site linking back...
*not good grammer, but i believe i spelled it out as clearly as i can* : )

Don't link your main site back.

Unless you have no links at all, it sounds like it would be worth little or maybe even detrimental. A bunch of links to pages with 0 PR and no content isn't a real good thing.
You can be assured, though, that if it works at all now, it probably won't work by this time next year.
Bottom line: Try to link with pages that have a decent PR (4 and up) or, at least, some content relevant to your site.

As Ferre says, don't link back to them and no harm done.
At the end of the day, there could be lots of blacklisted sites linking to you and big G wouldn't bat an eyelid.
If you link back to sites that G doesn't like, then they may not like your site too much either.

There are quite a few old geocities sites that have pretty good rankings and content. I believe those links are worth quite a bit. When you're talking about creating brandnew ones for the sole purpose of boosting link popularity .... just say NO

develop these pages so that they have some PR and then link back to your site.. creating many sites on angelfire and linking back to your website will look like a Link Network...NO NO...
better still work hard ony our website to increase it PR and back links....

I would stop worrying about PR and start looking if those sites are liked by Google (as in ... "do they have rankings?")

I used to to do that, a long time ago, creating websites on geocities and linking them to my other web sites. That was before the webmaster-forum.net days. Problem was keeping them indexed.
Didn't really see a huge benefit from it.

There is some benefit because of anchor text in the links on free domains. Because there are local sanctuaries all over the world who have set up websites on free hosts linking to the main sites (thc-ministry.org and thc-ministry.net) I was afraid of being penalized for a while, specially because on the .net domain there's a page with links back to those members sites.
I guess because it are all natural build links/sites and they are local, Google is treating them the same as with all other websites, I see no disadvantages.
See this Google result for thc ministry and you'll see what I mean.
