The answer to that question depends on your experience level, who hires you, how much your references rave about your work among other things.

But if you are looking for hard numbers, this may give you some idea...

Doing on page optimization is easy and sometimes even fun. I actually love doing this for other people free of charge.

However, the biggest part of SEO is acquiring relevant, trustworthy and respected links using your keywords. This can be extremely tedious, time consuming, and frustrating.

If you plan on charging for SEO, people want to see results. So even if you acquire tons of links for someone, but they don't see their site improve in the SERPS, your client is angry and demanding a refund.

I would think twice before doing SEO as a career.

As mentioned above, SEO entails so much more than just on page and off page factors. Taxonomies and site structure also play a large part in the deal. Dealing with duplicate content through canonical tags and such makes it a very detailed and involved thing. If you want to do SEO, then I'd suggest you really know your stuff, because once you go through the onpage factors and do all you can on the offpage factors, and still can't get a customer results, you're going to need the other factors I mentioned like looking at site structure and how effective their keyword choices honestly are. On the money income, again, as mentioned above, that's dependent on customers, and if you can't get a reputation for getting results, then your earnings will surely be affected. Good luck to you in your endeavors.

The problem with SEO is that there is no complete static information about it. Algorithms are secret and dynamic. Its changing regularly. You have to do many stuff without knowing whether it really works or not. You have to always update your self with other peoples observations and search engine news.

Any way you can start learning the basics from Google's SEO starter guide. I always recommend that for the newbies. Just search for it and download the pdf.

What kind of SEO career do you want? To work for a company doing SEO for their website, a freelancer providing SEO services or doing SEO for your own network of sites? They all vary and the pay will be different from type to type and company to company (and area to area).

SEO is a must for a Site. and Graphics design is also a good job. i don't think it will add any advantage to your profession. but you will learn the most important part of the Site by Learning SEO.
people now think that link building and commenting is SE>!! but no its just a part of SEO. the Total SEo is not so Easy and if you are interested in this field just to hear about how easy it is then i must suggest you to read more about SEO. Try to know about Full Search engine Optimization. not a part.
i am in this profession for 2 years. still i think i am a beginner.

Well I know some people who earn much more than an average income by providing SEO service to clients.

But you really need to be good at it to start making money. Even the average guy can learn to rank page 1 of Google for a mid-low competition (about 1000 exact local searches per month) in two weeks, with only 2 months of studying Internet Marketing in general. That was what happened to me. But still I can't be confident enough to provide SEO services in general, although I'm pretty sure I can provide backlinking services.

The real good guys can get super competitive terms rank #1 in 4 months, and if you reach that kind of level, well then you will earn a lot of money from doing SEO.

Hope this helps,
Isac

These all are really great tips. I am also working as an SEO. Actually just started my career few months back as was in same confusion as to be in same field or change it now. Actually the only problem I feel in this field is that you can't rely much on your work. Everything depends on search engine. They decide your destiny. This is my concern. Does anyone believe that the future is bright in this field. Any live examples?

Hi Alisha, it's true that it all depends on the search engines, primarily Google, but the fact is, if your SEO techniques don't work for you anymore, then it won't work anymore for all of the other people. And it's probably impossible for Google to change overnight 180 degrees. So yeah, the future is bright in the SEO market, but you need to keep studying, keep adapting to the changes and updates that Google makes, but you will soon find out, that Google does not make drastic changes overnight that are drastic enough to make your previous knowledge and studying become useless.

About live examples, the people I mentioned in the previous post are the live examples, I know them, but they are not like really famous people, so even if I
tell you their names, you wouldn't know them or you wouldn't find much about them on the Net.

Also what most successful internet marketers tend to do is not just do one thing like SEO, but do various things to have various streams of income all the time. E.g. you might do SEO and e.g also affiliate marketing in Amazon so that even when the SEO market is down you will still get enough money in affiliate commissions from Amazon.

Hope this helps in some way.
Isac

Thanks for the guidance. I think I am getting your point. I'll try to broaden my knowledge. I always try to be updated with the continuous changes going around in Google but never tried in affiliate marketing field. I also heard about Digital Marketing. Can you put some light on this too. I think it is also part of SEM. Am I right? And is there any use of doing certifications like Google Adwords or Analytics?

Mmm yeah I guess you mean Clickbank by Digital Marketing. I started my IM path on clickbank products but later moved on to Amazon affiliates because although Clickbank pays a much higher commission, it's also much harder to convert a person to buy a digital product instead of a physical product like on Amazon.
I'm not sure what you mean by SEM, and I also don't understand your last question. I don't really know much about Google Adwords, but I use analytics all the time.

Sorry I can't help you with that.

A career in SEO is a good choice but don't expect to get a high pay at first. You background as graphics and web designer as an advantage since you are an all-in-one package.

SEO is both an art and science. You have to be updated always since Google and the rest of the search engines update their SE algorithms all the time. Get an ebook on SEO basics first. Build a test website that you can practice SEO methods. Observe how your site improves its ranking from day to day. Subscribe to email newsletters from top SEO sites and join SEO forums to learn more about SEO.

Don't forget the importance of Social Media Marketing and how it affects your site's online visibility.

Hi, my advice is simple, because of the fact that you have not much experience try to work not as independent seo specialist but in a some marketing company, you can brcome more experienced and there will be people who can help you. The salary will be not very high but it worth to be done.

Hi,

Search Engine Optimization is the wave of future. SEO has a very good career and future but you need to know everything about it. Experience definitely makes counts but relevant and correct knowledge is more important in SEO like in marketing. One must know that 'what he/she should do in order to get required results' means works involved should be targeted to get results.

We all know that there are many people who do marketing but all are not successful marketeers because of lack of the knowledge of market, plan and all etc.... and same is the case here. We say that experience person can do but this is not right always as what if he has just worked as per instructed and has not learnt anything.

Hope you got what I want to say.
