Traffic has nothing to do with site type, it has to do with value of content, marketing effort, and so many other factors. You can build any kind of site you want, but if the content is crap, offers little value to people, it won't matter what kind of site you build. The simple point here is the fact that content is what drives visitors. Content is also what the search engines rank. So no matter what you build, if you don't have a good content development strategy, it won't matter what you build. I'm sure this is NOT the answer you wanted, but your question is quite vague to begin with. Just my two cents, hope it helps.
EDIT
Maybe approaching it from the standpoint of what would visitors posting ads want to read about? Why would/should they post to your site? Why are they posting them to begin with? There's a place for you to start.

That is a question that I see posted at a lot of help sites...
What's the next new big thing, what's an unexplored niche? How do I get ahead of the wave?
It seems like people want to post where a ton of people are already posting. If you start a new website that is a copy-cat of a site where there is already a large audience, why would any of them bother coming to your site?
Do you know anyone that would help you get a website started? DO they have any interests?
I've seen a lot of school forums that had an amazing amount of activity, because the class all posted on the forum.
I've also seen websites created around an activity where members of the group actively lobbied against a site being created... Maybe they can't get the site taken down, but they can certainly have a dampening effect against people using the site...
Do you have a group that you are a member of? What does everybody think about having their activities online?
Build a site around that activity, and then beg everyone to come post.

Celebrity stuff is easy to rank for and gets a decent amount of traffic with little effort. It pays crap though so if you are looking to earn any income, forget it with Celeb type stuff.

Do a site on something you love and/or are knowledgeable about. Coming up with quality content then will be a cinch, plus you'll enjoy it more. My site isn't even for profit, but I get great enjoyment out of growing and developing it. If you want to do all that plus make money, all that will come if you put your heart and mind into it.

It does not depend on what type of site you have in order to get good amount of traffic, it depends on the content and the niche of the site... If there will an informative and interesting articles or content on your site, therefore you can attract visitors.

There is no one correct answer to this question. Just to start with you can research the first 500 highly ranked sites (in terms of traffic). Use Alexa.com for your research. Although most of them will be companies and not individual sites. But many of them if not most of them had a single/double entrepreneur. But the bottom line is the quality, as
moneyonlinesorg mentioned before.
