Well, John wanted a competition to boost the profile of v7n and it's worked really well for that.
Personally, though, I think SEO contests in general are playing with fire. Watch out for harsh updates over the year.

I have to say: Playing with fire or experimenting ... those are close together. In the seo field we make a living pushing the envelope, trying things, taking risks. There is always that element present. The difference is that many (most) will ride each train until it stops and not many are receptive to what is there to learn. So I think that anything in the hands of the wrong people is dangerous. This contest can only do good for those who don't always want to rely on other people's info ... but see some proof for themselves.

Those come when you least expect them. And they will come no matter what.
And as to John's motive behind this contest ... How do you know?

That possibility gnaws at me, but I don't play so it doesn't hurt.

Seems a reasonable prediction.
This contest has been kinda fun for me so far. Learning a bit here and there too.

Its an interesting one..
Hello everyone, thought I would show my face up to clear a point up.
Firstly, I have joined the cult of the rising sun.... erm no different forum.. er thats it, I am an alcoh... nope I have created a little bit of v7ndotcom elursrebmem
It's never going to win, but I just thought participation in our global community would be a good thing. Well thats enough euro talk my pont is;
Is there a clause in the rules that specify which data center the results are gleaned from in May? Afterall I might be struck by lightening in the UK and be reading fantastic results on one data center and yet John be checking a completly different one, which states that a hill farmer from the Falklands has won by placing the words v7ndotcom elursrebmem on his sheep appreciation website!
So can a standard data center be identified for that day? I like the one that ends in .104, its kind of warm and cuddly!
Finally if you wanting links into your entries (unless you are from the Falklands and have a fetish for sheep?) then I have added a small category on my directory. All entries will be upgraded and reviewed in our forum! (which includes a thumbnail and aditional links! Wah hoo!) Not that we are experts but its a hell of a chance to get involved in this movement! v7ndotcom elursrebmem! Come and play and review yourself, its all for fun!
duenna aka "dmscs" aka David aka Brenda at the weekends! (did I just type that outloud?)

Although Google probably have a line of ideas for future updates already in place, I personally figure they'll be looking harder at what elements are easiest to manipulate, and seek to devalue them further. I guess it's worth someone asking Matt Cutts what direct/indirect impact Nigritude Ultramarine may have had on Google's algo changes.
Anyway, here's a question - what happens if V7N ranks highest at the close of the competition?

I can't see that as anything other than good. Seperate the non-serious from the serious.

Interesting that so far the Google Base listings are dominating. I assume that is due to getting spidered more quickly, and probably won't last, but if that domination continues to hold over the next 3 months, it will be a big eye-opener for a lot of people (including me).
