Webguerrilla posts an update to there rules.
http://v7ndotcom-elursrebmem.webguer...m-elursrebmem/
And they REQUIRE a link that shows in the Yahoo searches, so a no follow code won't even cut it!!! Hypocrits!!!!
I'll show them a nasty link (non-porn)....once I got the image made!!

He's just trying to get some attention. Don't be overly upset about it, guys.

Don't think it's quite as dramatic as that. Their ruleset was initially aimed at highlighting Google's issues with non-www versions of a domain - can't really achieve that without a link. It'd be different if the link was required to a commerical site but IMO Matt Cutt's blog is independent (from the contest anyway) and a fair target.
Plenty of buzz to go around gents!

I'm "buzzed out".
What happened to my quiet life of coffee and sleep?

No sleep for the next 4 months John. You can have lots of coffee though.

As I understand from his post, he only pays out when a backlink search on yahoo site explorer for Matt Cutt's blog (without www) shows the winning site in the results.
Dunno but that looks like he searches for an obstacle to not have to pay the winner, we all know that not all backlinks show on both Yahoo and Google. Is he hoping that he doesn't have to pay out?

In my experience, Site Explorer is pretty decent at picking up backlinks - I suspect the choice was made because you can filter backlinks to only the non-www version of the domain so it's easier to check. I doubt very much that Greg, Mike and Todd are even considering not paying out - they all have a lot of respect in the SEO community and have had for a long time.

2. Use one of the non-link alternatives for the duration of the contest. (We will track and logs linking sites in order to determine eligibility).

If I understand this correctly, it means that I'm not able to link here to win their prize money, correct?
Who are those people to tell me who I can't link to?
Maybe I'm a little too sensitive here, but when you come to me and tell me "I will do something for you, but you can't do such and such" ...that doesn't sit too well with me. This is a contest over keywords and not over who people choose to link to.

I don't think the link-to-Matt thing is all that bad, but the don't-link-to-v7n thing is just being obnoxious IMO.
We aren't requiring links, so if he's trying to force people not to link that's just obnoxious, IMO.

Right, I have no problem linking to someone else in addition. That would be a choice to win more money. But telling me that I can't win their prize money or their contest for linking to someone (the same someone whose keywords they are using for their own contest) is absolutely rediculous.

TBH I think it was maybe just a misunderstanding early on that has escalated but nonetheless here we are.

They have to save their face right now which is why they keep insisting on the "don't link to" spiel!
But like I've said before: It's one thing if SitePoint edits one of my posts over there saying it's self promotion (they are pretty sensitive over there), and it's another thing when you try to tell me what I cannot do on my own site

Well, I do not think he will have to pay out anyway because of all contestants I have only seen one or two who didn't link to v7n.
