It can happen either way and does depend on factors such as how strong sites are linking to you (e.g. DMOZ), where and what your content is as well as a few others.

Thanks sitetutor, if a sites description is from the content rather than meta is it generaly a sign that the site has stronger links and better content, or is it more complex than that. Reason I mention it is that the uk site that was at #1 for a while had it's description from meta (while the other top sites didn't), as does my site.

LOL!!! My spammy sites one of the first 15 domains there!!
If it doesn't get banned before the contest ends, then we'll know Google is really messed up when it comes to fighting spam!!!

I would say so. From what I've seen, it's often the sites that are well established in the index, which do get their description straight from the body of the site. I have lately seen titles of the listings coming from the <h> tags rather than the meta ones as well. Don't have an example right now, has anyone else seen the same?

I think it has to do with the search words being in the meta tags

"…risks must be taken, because the greatest risk in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn and feel and change and row and love and live. Chained by his certitudes, he's a slave. He's forfeited his freedom. Only the person who risks is truly free."
Sooo... Why I respected Nintendo!! I am still waiting what happened with Google theory as compared your site.

Cloaking can be very useful indeed. Use your user agent switcher to fake googlebot's UA "Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)" and see how my contest page reached Google page 2: http://www.actulab.com/v7ndotcom-elursrebmem.jan

Jan, cloaking with nice manners. All you did was to remove the unneccesary info.
I hate to find cloaked pages that change the appearance of the page entirely and just serve up a trillion keywords with a bunch of internal links.
However. Yesterday I found a bunch of pages that cloaked links to relevant pages, and didn't serve these to the ordinary visitors. Strange behaviour since the pages i linked to where all without PR.
