Black hat, white, or even pink, I don't think it's the point, neither. One of the interests of an SEO contest is to try things without taking care of the color of the hat you are wearing, in order to better understand the SERPs. Some of those tricks can be used in real life, some cannot, but at least it may help understanding the way Google and its bots work.
I think that contests are the best way to test techniques without having bad repercussions and without being unfair or grievous to competitors.

Taggle Team members are all good guys (or girls, hi Marie!), and I know they can/will squat in the first position. I support them 99% (other 1% represents the fact I'll try to do my best to friendly give them a "déculottée" -thrashing- )

it is my understanding that the rules for this contest involved that you could use black or white hat....so I fail to see where taggle is doing a bad thing

True they are very tough competition, but its smart to exploit their strategy and make it your own, instead of worrying about it
