Why so many SEO contests?
Hi all,
I'm just wondering why there are so many SEO contest on this year 2006. Between V7ndotcom Elursrebmem, Redscowl Bluesingsky, Cpayscom Online Casinos and Carcasherdotcom seocontest, in the USA, and Tiger l'osmose plus Ziolrooski and Chocoku, in France, it's hard to choose on which one to compete (I'm competing on 4 of them at the same time).
Has someone a theory or idea why that craze for SEO contests happens this year? (2005 was more calm)

John started talking about his contest in December. Then Redscowl Bluesingsky thought of giving his iMac away after finding out about the V7N contest. Then sitetutor submited his v7n site to a directory. That gave the owner of the directory the idea to do the Carcasherdotcom seocontest contest, then....

If each time John has an idea, there is such an outbidding, I just regret his first idea was not to send me money or women
I know than several SEO contests where about (or supposed) to be launched in january/february (prepared for 2 to 3 month), but didn't start just because of the number of already existing projects or contests.
Well I guess it's just in vogue nowadays... Let's hope it will make the search engines react, for all this not to be useless (except for those who will win, of course).
Thanks for your reply Nin10do

Next will be something like creating a whole new site and get it ranked within a short period of time. Or build a search engine

LOL!
It does kind of work like that sometimes. Before I started BlueFind, there weren't a lof of web directories out there, but when that hit PR8 and it was making $30,000+ a month, everybody decided to start their own directory.
Which is alright by me - makes getting more links easier.

Copy a good idea is of course what a big part of the web is made of.
But IMO, the reason why there are so many contests right now is because there is a market. I mean that many webmasters want to play SEO contests. SEO contests are not real life SEO, however SEO contests are unique opportunities to test SEO techniques.
Real life SEO if boring. You can't really test more than the "the missionary position", because you can't offord to take risks with a serious site. With a contest site, you can try everything. And if the blacklist is what you get, so what... it's just a contest site.
At least that's why I'm playing

Not if you can't find it on eBay.
I wouldn't be surprised to see SEO contests become a trend. Actually, I don't even think that the trend is so narrow as to be SEO based. I think it's the widespread "free entry" contests that gives decent prizes away to free entries with minimal work and BIG prizes to the people who offer them!
an example would be www.winyourwayin.com. It's free poker out in my area. I remember the first game they hosted, the bar had like 90 people show up on a day that normally had 3. I thought man if I could invest... this is going to be huge. they have tons of bars (their customers) and cafes signed up hosting games for thousands of people now.
SEOcontest(s) are another variable on that whole idea. It may not be "new" but I think it's trend is picking up steam.

I second all these questions.
There are a few SEO contests out there, but I think we are only seeing the beginning still.

the v7ndotcom contest is by far the largest seo contest ever, the others happening at this time are just bootleggers in my opinion

well duh.
It's a great idea and it does promote a site very well. The word of mouth is of course there for a number of reasons. Controversy included.
