if hyphen is seen as space how come.........

I thought a Google search for-

keyword1-keyword2

would show the same amount of results as -

keyword1 keyword2

But it doesn't, how come?

I thought hyphen was 'seen' as a space.

Using Google uk with hyphen results in 2,850,000

Without hyphen results in 4,450,000

When the words are connrected by a hyphen, it appears to use that as a single search term as opposed to two words.

Google sees hyphens as dividers in URLs and body text.
