Number of links on a page

How much of a bad thing is having more than 100 links on a page?

When it is a external links the number of links need to be retained below 20. The weightage of both the internal and the external links gets diluted with the increase in the links.

I'm more concenred about internal links. A lot of SEO sites say to stay under 100 links which provides a difficult challenge when you have a lot to offer.

In another forum I read the explanation, that too many links "confuse" the bots and that they take away too much link juice.
I do not believe in those theories, having used more links for some time and nevertheless got an upgrade in pagerank. I suppose it is good usability practice if you can reach every page within your site from every page.

I think it is always good to keep the links down to a minimum, dividing the site upto into different sections is a way to fix things imo.

At one point Google did say in their guidelines to keep links down to 100 or less but they have removed that. Even Matt Cutts (Google Spam Dept) refers to this now removed line in his post How many links per page?.

What would be more important is the usability of your pages. If you have a ton of links on a page it can be very confusing to the visitor.

There is also the consideration of getting the right balance between the number of links on a page and actual content so your page(s) don't look like a link farm page.

Linking out is good! Having links out to reputable related websites as a resource or as a confirmation of what you have said on the page adds to your reputation as a valuable resource. Hey, it might even get you an incoming link from the site, an interview or something else that benefits your business/website.
