Buying Text Links By Jill Whalen
http://www.searchengineguide.com/wha.../0218_jw1.html
Good article. However I am not too sure about what could possibly be a “footprints” detectable by Google as I don’t see any evidence of this being implemented... or technically feasible unless its detecting rotating ads.
I have never ever brought links as I see them as far too overpriced.

Actually, the thing I found interesting is that Whalen is now admitting that links make a difference in rankings. When did she have that epiphany?

If the SEs are detecting rotating links then how will that affect the digitalpoint coop?
I'm just asking because I just added it to my site after about a year of being afraid SEs will eventually catch on and lable it as spam links or give it some other form of penalty.

I still think she gives SE's too much credit. I can buy relevant, one-per-domain links and have total confidence that I can do it in a way that neither SE's nor web surfers will know it to be a paid link.

buying links do help, but i have a feeling that in a few years the parad of links arent goign to have much effect unless otherwise the links were meant to be advertisements not ways to get ranked better in google

seems to me that buying backlinks is OK, but far more worthwhile when located on content-relative sites that could result in a little foot traffic as well.
I did read an article somewhere on Google though stating that Links are going to hold some serious value for the foreseen future.
who knows.
It's a good article, although it seems to contradict a lot of what I've been reading and experiencing lately. But on the flip side... lets assume that something like this 'footprint' tracing could happen (which of course there would be ways around it.) Then at least it's in the back of our minds and we have a jump start... eh?

The Day
The day I google the word 'failure' and not see Bush, Carter or Moore on the top results is the day I believe link pop is not the huge factor.

As someone who used to be employed by one of the larger “brokers” of text links, I’ve seen just about every side of the industry. I know it from a buyer’s perspective, a seller’s perspective, and of course, the infamous middleman’s perspective.
I would definitely suggest you researching the site that you’re about to pay money for a link on. There are a TON of brand new sites that would buy links from a broker to increase their PR with the sole intention of selling those links back to the broker. Many of the people who sold links to the broker had no idea what they were doing, just that there was a nice shade of green on their google bar. I mean sure, if you just want PageRank, whatever, buy it. But if you’re actually trying to make a living on the internet, whether its selling ice cream, skin cream, or herpes cream, you know that your site won’t get where you need it to be just by buying 50 PR5 links. You know that the best sites to get links from are those that have been around for a while, have their own solid link popularity foundation, good traffic, and is a valuable resource. Look into these when buying a link.
Some sites actually have “sponsored links” or even “paid links” in plain text. Just be weary of these, as if my naked eyes can see this, I’m SURE search engines can easily pick up on that. Combine that with a link to your flower store being mixed in with a link to a casino, a link to a pharmacy, a link to a store about football, and a link to a store that sells shoes. If I were a search engine, except for MSN maybe, I would definitely be able to see that someone were trying to increase their link pop and/or PR. Just a warning, stay away from these.
Another thing I’d like to suggest is that if you’re going to buy a link, don’t just buy it for one month and expect miracles to occur, or try and predict the next PR update and buy it just for that. Find good links, and keep them in place. The age of the links definitely help.
Now, there ARE good links out there for the purchasing, and I know MANY people who buy a ton of links, but only a select few who are smart about it. Like John said, RELEVANT and ONE-PER-DOMAIN. Those are the magic words.
I know there’s quite a bit of stuff I’ve missed, so if anyone’s got anything to add, I’d love to hear it as well. At any rate, I hope this helps people in their quests for paid links.

Thanks Dustin,
I've been reading this forum for probably a couple of years now, but NEVER said anything! I really like the vibe here, much more than a lot of the other forums!
