SEO Pro's Opinion Poll

How did you become an SEO, what attracted you to the industry?

Many SEO's have sprung up in the past few years and a lot have different reasons for wanting to be or choosing to jump into the industry.

*example: I originally started doing Web design and development, but with the birth of search engines and the need for web sites to be positioned for certain keywords I decided to offer inhouse SEO. The learning process went quickly for me, but what really attracted me to search engine optimization was the challenge it presented and the income potential for being good at it.

You can be as detailed as you like, but make sure to include the specific reasons SEO attracted you or maybe you simply HAD to learn it to promote your own sites. I am planning on doing a write-up later using the results from multiple forums and the best answers will receive a direct link from the write-up, a basic link and a featured link in my SEO directory. In addition if it's popular enough I may distribute the article, so it is possible there will be links on other sites as well.

Once I publish the main article, I will include what attracted me to SEO and site promotion and the whole industry surrounding.

By accident, I had shitty domains and registered at an affiliate program since one of the names has gotten type in traffic (like 100 hits/day). I've then built a page around the program and friends linked to me. Then my services were being requested. I have little respect for the industry, but it's gotten my foot into the door, where now I can work on things such as media presentation

Well it's still a rather new post, so no one has responded. Feel free to PM, reply, whatever.

I will be mentioning all participating threads from multiple forums in the article and will most likely be linking to them if I end up using quotes or snippets. The best most unique (honest) answers will get a link from the article to their SEO related site. In addition to the article link I will throw in a basic link in my directory and a featured link in the directory as long as it's an SEO related site.

Doesn't have to be a "life-story," just what attracted you to the industry and a little about how you got involved. Maybe what you like about it the best.

I am a for-long-time designer, but after having made many "good-looking" websites, that weren't visited at all, I began to wonder how to change that. The only way was to learn SEO...

I've been on the web since 2001, I have done it all, domain speculation ebay, etc. I'm just trying to learn a little more about SEO right now, nothing too serious.

I have no formal education on anything near the topic but had to learn by fire. Our site had been through 3 other 'professionals' with absolutely no progress in 4 years. (and thousands of dollars).

So I started researching last Novemeber when I was getting maybe 2 visitors a day. 100 or so 12 hour days later we're getting 220-300+/day. and I'm only paying for about 15-20/day in PPC so I think I'm starting to round the learning curve.

I don't charge anyone for SEO, I try to help folks who are as green as I or greener with what I know, but I'm not an expert. Not even close. What I'm doing seems to be working short term, so in 6-12months we'll see if it's holding strong.

I started as a flash animator, then once actionscript was released that's when I got into coding, I then became both a flash animator and developer. Well actionscript's syntax is based off of ecmascript, which was later renamed to javascript. So naturally I jumped into html/javascript/dhtml etc. I then moved to php and other server side scripting languages. PRetty soon I became a full fledged wbe developer.

Out of pure curiosity I jumped into seo mainly to learn more about it and defend flash against false claims that it hurts seo. Flash doesnt hurt seo, putting yoru conent into flash is a bad seo move. But dont put your content in flash and it works just fine. So anyways I became an seo completely out of hobby and curiosity. I refuse to offer seo services to anybody because I just don't have any interest in seo'ing for somebody else. I find seo skills to be usefull, it is obviously a grown industry and still growing, however it is still underground for the most part...in my opinion anyways.

I started my carrer way back in 2001 as an e-commerce guy selling stuff only through an online store. To increase sales through the store I searched on the internet how to promote my store.

I came across Corey rudl articles and other stuff. There I picked up more information from Jill Whalen and her newsletter.

I was damn interested and started to learn slowly and slowly. This is how I got interested in SEO.

Now its been over 5 years in SEO and I have good respect in my industry. Planning to open my own firm now.
