What are the pros and cons of subdirectory names as far as SEO is concerned?

I don't think there is. If ever there are I would like to know as well.

For me, as long as the website contents are unique and quality, properly optimized on-page it's gonna rank. Of course, off-page optimization plays an important role as well.

I've heard subdomains are good for keyword targeted search results, that way you don't have to keep buying domains.

Subdomains might be bad if you have it subbing a completely unrelated site.

If you are talking of subdomain then i think there will be no problem, this is also the same if you are talking about sub pages in your site.
