Hi Teesort,
The further back in SERPs (search engine results pages) your website is, the less organic/search traffic you will receive. Therefore, you will want to place as well as you can (i.e. as close to page one, position one as you can).
For the 3 big search engines (Google, Yahoo! and Bing), backlinks are the primary determinant of your placement in search results - where you will rank.
Use the
Google Keyword Tool for keyword ideas, picking the longest (also called "long tail"), least competitive keywords first to build backlinks with. You will use these keywords and keyword phrases as your anchor text. When you rank well for those, move to increasingly competitive keywords and keyword phrases.
Create, and encourage the creation of, a diverse link profile: the quality and quantity of back links pointing to your web property.
Write and submit articles to article directories such as
EzineArticles.com. Generally speaking, the harder it is to get into an article directory, the more traffic you will receive from your article. Use your anchor text in your resource box, not the article body (if allowed by the directory): if you include a self-promotional link in the body of your article, it is unlikely to be picked up for syndication even if it merits it (ridiculous, but true).
Make sure your content compels organic linking. In other words, make sure your content is something that others will want to link to.
If your site lends itself to Social Media such as YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, open accounts with these platforms. This also encourages organic linking; but, and more importantly, search engines - especially Google - pay a lot of attention to social media, thereby increasing your organic/search traffic.
More after you come back in 3 months to report to V7 how these have worked for you.
