Pages ending in extension better than a directory?

In WordPress, you can creat pages, but they list as directories.

domain.com/page1/

I want to have it save as an extension, domain.com/page1.php, instead.

However, someone there says that search engines don't have a preference when it comes to SEO and such. Are they right?

Here's where they said it doesn't make a difference... WordPress

Thanks

You can change a setting in the Wordpress admin panel to make the urls appear from memory. It is probably better to use the directory type as far as SEO goes because you are cutting out the ? and variables.

I think SEO-wise domain.com/this-page/ is better than domain.com/this-page.html

Really? Wow. I'm used to checking competition on some pretty saturated markets, (ie, health etc.) and it always seems like the top positioned sites have an extension.

However, I will not worry about it. This is for a content rich site with a few directories. I didn't want it to get out of hand when it came to the page with the article/information on it by still ending with / in the url rather than an extension. BUT, if it doesn't matter, then I'll let it rest

Thanks so much for your input.

Easier to remember as well from a non SEO point of view, easy to remember urls are good incase someone forgets to bookmark your site or doesnt know how to use their history cache.

Uban, the extention is a very little part of overall website ranking. I think you'll find that anchor text links is the biggest part, and file naming counts for very little.
