does Geolocation matter for ranking in search engines.....?

Hi all

I have one small problems one of my client site hosted on usa based server domain is regested to usa server,

Now if he checks his keywords from usa location in yahoo engine he lost on sixth or seventh page of the engine.......

The same keywords if i checked from india it produces good result on yahoo at 1 and 3 position.....

Till date the keywords r doing well in both USA and india location to yahoo engine.

Can any body tell me whats probs this time.....

Thank you

Server location has nothing to do with ranking.

I agree John, as long as you search the .com (international and default US) versions of the search engines.

But in many countries, most of the people will search the local versions of the search engines. For example in France people will mainly use:
www.google.fr
fr.search.yahoo.com
search.msn.fr

And since most of the French searches won't specify the search language, pages hosted in France will be given a boost in the results.

Ok, it's no explanation to what you're seeing jameswatt. In fact I would have thought that what you're seeing would happen with a site hosted in India.

Of course there is.
Each Google local version is adapted. You wil get trouble to rank a website in France with a .com hosted in Usa for example.
And it's obvious, a french website is more likely to show relevant results for a search of a french user. For news, politics, law... Don't you think ?

In 'v7ndotcom elursrebmem' SEO contest I tried some cross-language and cross-country linking... with poor results. So I'm wondering about regionalism factor for baclinks. Maybe Jameswatt reply will give us a track.

I fully agree with MagicYoyo. There is no regionalism in SEO when you are in the US, but regionalism a very important factor everywhere else in the world.

My opinion on the importance of local (regional) backlinks. They are important, at least in Google.

Well, my bank account would disagree

different cultures/countries use the english lanuage in different ways, resulting in country specific data centers recieving different search volumes for particular keyword pharses and different click thru results on the page title & meta description in the serps.

So on the basis search engines use the click thru rates & bounce back rates just like adwords as a factor to rank sites in the serps, the local cultures realtionship to how your meta describtion & page title appears in the serps must have some effect?

One question came to my mind when I was on the road yesterday... Did you checked the location of websites wich are above you in SERPs in Google India ?
Maybe they are Indian sites. This would be good explanation for this results... at least it's closer prospect than regional links factor (not proven yet).
