Microsoft’s director of Bing search, Stefan Weitz says the company’s search engine, Bing, which is now two years old, thinks it is ok for Bing to be second to Google for now.

I agree that as now bing given the detail of query and after google search result many people go for bing to search. As day by day bing is be more and more popular and get the higher position.

I think being second is actually very good for them, even though IE is the main reason for that.

Bing is at least trying to work with what people want in searches. I think that's the biggest issue with yahoo and some of the other search engines. I still hope that someone can give google a run for the money

Yahoo United state and Japan sync their data with Bing, so there is no problem for Bing become 2nd top search engine.

If Bing could sort out their indexing so that it updated their search index as quickly and efficiently as Google does Bing could really take a chunk out of Google search market share. Same goes for their image search. If it updated quicker with the relevant results it would better Google image search hands down. Google's image search is pants now as other than the first page loading navigation seems to have been thrown to the wind in Google image search and when ever I or those I have asked to check click to see more images the load time is atrocious on Google image search.
If Bing could iron out a few shortfalls it really could not only become the second (which I sort of though it was like for example the info like mentioned above and what it actually helps power, which I thought was common knowledge tbh) it could really start to even challenge Google.
Google IMHO are taking huge risks presently with some of the things they are rolling out and trying. The changes in their look, those still to come (like Google webmaster's new look about to roll out) as well as changes to their search over recent months like instant search combined with Google suggest are things that once the novelty wear's off becomes annoying to ordinary searches who don't care about such fancy things, & find distracting and annoying.
Many people wish Google had stayed as it was. Like I say big risks IMHO but Google of course don't really need to worry about such things as no matter what they will be number 1 for a long time to come yet.
Bing has features that are nicer than Google's the related search feature on Bing is as useful to the average surfer as it is to webmasters and SEO's doing research. Much in the same way that people like the "Might Jeeves Suggest" feature on Ask.
And yes there are cross overs where others (Not just Yahoo I think I remember reading) are using Bing data - I will see if I can find the relevant info and if I can post it when I have time.
It is also fairly apparent that all the big four SE's are using each others data from search results alone, as for many searches once they settle down (if they ever really do that LOL) the results are very similar on all the big 4 SE's.
Bing is a good SE, and if it updated it's index more quickly it really would be a force to be reckoned with .... IMHO....

thanks for the article.....honestly didn't know that but it kind of makes sense in a business way, an alliance would benefit both companies whose main competitor is the same ( google )

A sort of mediocre affirmation, but taking into account Google's supremacy, understandable.
The question is... what would they need to do to become #1?
They have already...
+ made a more beautiful home page
+ got to provide pretty good results
+ started a community for webmasters
...mm... drop Microsoft?

I think being 2nd in 2years is bad.
It's easy to find a NICHE, and in Microsofts case throw millions into a product just to compete with the worlds largest SE which most people cant do. So if you have the money & brand to push it go for it.
But in Microsofts case once your on Top only place to go is down, and I beleive in foundations makes companies what they are now & will be. In bing's case there known only becasue of "MICROSOFT" and really they arnt anymore feature-rich then google, yahoo ect.
Theres alot of things Bing can do in the future to obtain #1 and secure it, but i think its going to be more then even bill gates pocket-book
Google will win everytime.
(unless MS pc's block them and they put a BING button on keyboards lol).

@TheRack
I think thta's the point of why they are gonna stay number 2 and be happy about it. They don't have the "Brand" until people start to say
Go Bing it
The way they say Go Google it or I Googled
Not I "searched" I Googled.
Until someone comes up with that definitive brand (which Bing is not and just won't do as too many people watched Friends LOL)) Google can sit on the top of their hill teasing all the others

Could be a way for Microsoft to get more "bing for their buck" by maybe selling it to google & other Search engines, or maybe one day aquiring google & other companies :p
I think with sites like wikipedia coming about the age of search engines is running out.
Back in the late 1990's it was popular to use search engines, you would swift through 1-30 pages before what you were looking for rather it was a product, service or information. Now adays everythings so fined tuned, you really find what your looking for in the first 1-3 pages.
I like many search engines, theres not proven way of displaying results. All the SE's have there own format so it works out great, all information is good info just how you use it

Yes, yahoo is in problem these days and facing setback in improving its marketing strategies. Possibly yahoo will regain its previous position once more.

I totally agree that these days yahoo cant give the accurate and relevant result. And everyone asks is there any kind of algorithm in yahoo behind giving relevant result.
