Does optimizing your code in the WC3 verifier help your ranking at all?

Generally, no. But at least try to keep the HTML clean so spiders can easily parse it.

Is there usually a general size you should keep the page too?

Definitely below 100k (many spiders stop reading after 100k). Google "recommends" you keep it below 80-100k.

A good rule of thumb is if you're concerned you may be spamming with content... then you're spamming with content.
