PRO with good alexa ranking
Sometimes I receive link exchange requests from sites and they have a PR0, but an alexa traffice ranking of around 250,000. (not sure how accurate alexa is). I guess it is possible to have no page rank and still have good traffic?
I just find that interesting.

The real question is why do people bother with the results of such useless tools?

Probably because there are a lot of people that don't realize they are useless. The average internet surfer may think the tool actually means something so sites use that to their advantage. That is the only think I can think of.
However, if one site has an alexa traffic rank of 2 million and another has a traffic rank of 3,000, it may not mean a lot, but I think it means something.

There are very few ways of gauging the traffic of a website, so people turn to Alexa. It's worthless, but how else is a third party going to get an idea of what kind of traffic a website gets?

John, do you think it would be bad for a website to publicly post their traffic? Is there an advantage in perception by not having the exact numbers public?

Huh. Some sites do post their traffic, but generally speaking the less info you give your competitors the better.

What's the point of such traffic stats when most of the people know that alexa ranking of a site can be easily manipulated.

I don't think most people know. I only learned this recently since visiting forums like this one. Like I said, I really believe the *average* internet user thinks the alexa ranking means something.

Well, Alexa stats are only gathered through the Alexa toolbar, and I've never met anyone who's ever seen it. So I knew from the start there's little reason to pay attention to those numbers.

Forget about link exchanges. Especially forget about link exchanges that are only about PageRank. Only do a link exchange if the site will send you a decent amount of traffic, and you'll never get one of those in an unsolicited email.

I guess that would all depend on what your idea of 'traffic' is. You have to start somewhere and I have acquired decent links on sites from unsolicited emails. It's a matter of having professionalism whenever your dealing with another webmaster and ass kissing, I'm not sure which one.

I think the use of Alexa is not purely intended to get the real traffic since many browsers don't have this add-on (I am one) and so it does not produce accurate data. It is used to compare with competitors and also to gauge the overall improvement of traffic with respect to the other web sites.
