Does Twitter Effect Your Serp Rank?
I have a question that I haven't been able to answer.
Does twitter effect your serp rank in a long term affect or is it only good for short periods and boosts of traffic (referral)?
I've found and been told conflicting answers saying it depends on the amount of views and retweets, to not at all.
Anyone have any conclusive evidence to support either side?

Nobody can really tell you for sure except Google. But an interview with Matt Cutts indicated that social signals (i.e. Twitter RTs and follows) are used as SERP factors. So if you read between the lines, it does have an effect. Although how much that effect is remains to be seen.

Care to explain why you think it's a waste of your time?
Lot's of movie stars, internet gurus and other folks still use it everyday to access information and communicate with people.
I don't think Twitter influences your serp but a burst of traffic from a few tweets and new followers can tend to give you more steady traffic if they become a everyday viewer of your website.

I am really unsure about that, however the links at Twitter are nofollow but it's a great source of traffic once you build a strong no. of followers. Read this

I can see where rabbistarak is coming from, twitter is only useful for traffic in a temporary sense, because none of it is organic traffic so its not dependable. But any traffic is something and every bit helps so its all a matter of perspective, I guess.
Thanks for the input about the topic though, it did answer my question. From what it seems, backlinks arn't the focus from twitter. Google appears to look at the reputation of the followers and the keywords there linked to based on retweets, profiles, and content. So, from what everyone has stated, twitter effects your serp rank, but its not in the traditional sense of the backlinking with a keyword and you get a link.
Anyway thanks for the help guys!

I also read it on SEOMOZ Blog regarding the same. But that may be some assumptions becuase link building process, content optimization, google panda updates, modifications of title, meta description, keywords density etc things should be consider for those sites. A comparative study and long term analysis is required for any full proof conclusion. I personally believe that social networking plays a wide role in traffic and branding.

It is hard to say if Twitter can have a direct effect on serps or not. Regardless, Twitter is a fantastic tool to let people know very quickly what you are upto, what you have just released etc, and it is excellent for curating content and finding the current trends too.

I do agree with you but however, if your followers are real ones you got on your own then the traffic would be great. Some people buy a twitter follower service to get a lot of followers but most of them don't either buy stuff from what you promote on twitter or even don't visit your website.

I'm not sure of the value Twitter has in general for my particular business, but I use it as another means to get the word out if we are having any specials or promoting a new item. We don't have many followers yet, and it sort of takes a back seat to our Facebook marketing. As for SERP, I doubt there is much in it from what I have seen. (Just my 2 cents)

Not only twitter but all the social site which is useful to others and hold some meaningful , these kind of all social sites affect the serp rank. As social sites now a days provide much traffic to google or to any other site. And if there is useful information with the traffic then google will definitely give that site on nearest position in search results. So due to the traffic and meaningful content, any social site can affect the serp rank.
