The quickest way to do this is to take keywords from your keyword selection that you researched. Go to Google, and type them all in one at a time. Around the first ten listings for that keyword will be your strongest competition simply because of the keyword used.

(You can then take it further from there by checking the backlinks they have etc. and also their site to see how relevant they are to you.)

Your close competitors are those website who are on first page or on first page above your website, with your specific keyword. By the way there are some tools also available, and they produce result on the same rule.

Here are tips, not necessarily steps:

1.Type in your site's main keywords and see who, what appears in Google, Yahoo, Bing... those will be your competitors
2.For which keywords do users find your site? Find your most powerful keyword combinations, type those in (these are those keywords for which you rank well), then those who are close before or close after you will be your competitors.
3.When buying ads in directories, articles sites, look for similar sites.

There is an easy way to see your competitor list. There is one site keywordspy.com. In that site you can observe the all things for your website. But i have found that it will show the list of your competitor but this site is not accurate for showing the keyword position or other observation. But just for getting the competitor list , you can use it.

Taking Dreamrage's method and expanding it,
Put your keyword phrase in quotes. This limits the results to exact matches for that phrase. That isn't how the average surfer uses the search box but it does cut down on the non related searches (not all of them though).

There are several techniques available online from where you can find out the competitor's Keyword. The best method is to analyze the website manually and look carefully on title tag and meta description.

A point to mention in this respect is trying to find the real competitors that have been dominating Google front pages for weeks, months and even years and not simply doing some searches and noting down the results and then jumping to conclusions. For example, try checking out Google results on first and fifteenth of every month and then write down the listings data and repeat the this practice for some months to find the challengers that are working on their SEO projects greatly.

This is better than looking at the number one domain in your niche on a single day, which might have just gone up there because of a temporary algorithm change that might be on the third page of Google next week. You know, it is of great importance to realize how to compete against the domains that have been at the top of Google for a long time, revealing great importance in terms of content and link popularity and then forming ideas to cope with them, through maintaining a better website.

Naturally, a domain which has been at first spot in a specific niche for a full year is the biggest competitor than another portal which has been on front page of Google for the similar term but only for a week.

Google your targeted keyword and see who is dominating the organic and paid for search result.Use the google trend website and to find what other site a visitor to your competitor's website visited. If you are selling products then review the competition coming in from amazon.com, ebay.com.If you are a content site or provide some services you might want to spend some time searching the news and blog aggregators.
