The problem with Alexa is that it is inaccurate and can easily be faked but advertisers
and customers rely on it to evaluate the importance of your site and to decide whether
to trust you or not. To be able to sell ad space on your site through certain online
services, you are required to have a good Alexa ranking. Customers will shop on your
site more easily if you have a good Alexa ranking.

Alexa rank will be very helpful to increase website traffic and achieve such popularity. Alexa ranking is very helpful in determining the page rank, as it gets traffic. The websites that hold higher ranks will indicate that they are very well-known and popular. The higher the Alexa rank the more the value for the website. Alexa rank focuses and tries to increase website traffic.

Alexa.com is the most extensively known website-traffic following web page on the Web. It's state is to list sites according to their visitors, the cheaper your They ratings amount the better your web visitors is really. For example, if your web page is placed #8,001, that is expected to mean that out of 100,000,000 sites, yours locations 8,001st in regards to getting web visitors. Just like a base battle, the better #1, the better.

Even if alexa ranking can be manipulated, why do give it a damn. For me, what is important that how many visitors I am getting on my website. What will I get, if I manipulate alexa rank. Visitors: NO. It's the reverse process and should be taken accordingly.

I like to believe that the rank is important, I use it to determine where my users come from, where they come from on our competition, and how each site's users grow, pageviews viewed etc.
I then use the stats and compare them to server stats, piwik, and google analytics.
Google Analytics only appears to pick up some 40 users daily, does not pick up myself and many of our users.

The importance is questionable. Just like many other things it can be gamed and it wouldn't be that hard.
Some people consider the Alexa ranking when buying a site. I think it's largely irrelevant IMHO.
It's an approximation at best, skewed towards the webmaster/designer/seo guys that have the toolbar installed.

I don't have the toolbar installed as safari disallows it, however the what stats are there to truely find out how many "real" users visit your site whether they have cookies enabled for google analytics? That is the only explanation I enabled the cookie I got noticed - I disabled the cookie I went unnoticed.
I have made a quick php script and any user who views the script (hidden in the design), any IP's that are bots I disinclude I seem to get an idea of how many visitors and I can use that with piwik and alexa and see if the stats add up. They seem to work out so far.

I don't think MSN/Yahoo or Google take "Alexa" rank in consideration.

I think you should go for high rankings in SE instead of messing your time with alexa. Anyway i suggest you to install the alexa toolbar and see the diference after a while.

Alexa rank is a analytics and ranking tool. It is used to gather information about competition, for example, or make assumptions about the site's importance.
The limitations come from the way it is implemented. It doesn't exist out there, for Google or Yahoo to capture the data and provide it to users. It collects data only from the users who install Alexa toolbar, so quite a closed cycle.
And you can imagine that the data it provides is not representative. Nobody's sure who installs the toolbar. So which sites are ranked against which other sites, and how the ranking is measured?
It has so many limitations, that specialists recommend staying away from it.

It depends on what you mean by "significant". In what way?
It is significant in the sense you can see how well your site is doing, its rank compared to competitors etc. But related to SEO, im not sure its important in how well your site ranks.

Alexa is a pretty decent way to see how your website is doing, but as said before, it can be easilly manipulated by buying traffic. In addition, I believe alexa only indexes sites that are browsed by people who have the alexa plugin activated on their browser, or am I mistaken there?
It didnt have any stats for my blog for weeks, but now that I am getting a bit more traffic, Alexa is starting to give me ranks etc (where before there was just no information available)
I mainly use it to see how many backlinks I have

With Alexa, Compete, Quantcast, and possibly several more have made scads of money on folks looking for even more metrics to buy or judge their sites over others.
Traffic is where it's at.

Basically an Alexa rating is not important. Having a high or low Alexa rating does not help a site bit, unless you require to make use of it to impress individuals who are impressed by this type of thing, but do not understand it.
Alexa Rank doesn't mean anything. To rank high in Google go for a high Google Page Rank, sites with a high Google Page Rank have more worth and value as compared to sites that have a high Alexa Rank.

What are the techniques to improve alexa rank of a site? What I observe is while my visits are down, alexa rank also goes down. Is it connected?

In terms of Alexa ranking, the lower number is better, e.g. 2,076,553 is higher rank than 6,049,794.

Alexa rank can be easily manipulated and is not an accurate indicator to a site's popularity. I have seen a number of people offering Alexa rank decreasing jobs on various forums. However the one place I feel it could be used is while selling a website, a low alexa rank could increase your website's worth.
