One problem with this statistic is that Alexa doesn't rank 100m websites it ranks 30m, and last figure I saw for the total number of websites out there was 350m.
Add to that mix the fact that it is limited to information gathered through Alexa toolbar users, and then further add that it is only available in English, and I don't think it can be claimed to be representative of the web as a whole.
That then puts into perspective your example figure of a site ranked 8,001st, i.e. it is 8,001st out of less than 9% of all websites, as measured by those who have the toolbar (and are those people typical of everyone?).
The true traffic rank of that site could be 8.000.001st for all we know.

I don't know why you worry about the Alexa ranking. Because, it does not give any benefits for your website except to show a number i.e. a rank for your website. However, keep working on your website by create a quality and original content which is relevant to your website's category and it is obviously worth doing (Google loves the original and quality content).
If you can receive more number of visitors and pageviews to your website then automatically the result will be affected on Alexa ranking (you can observe the growth and betterment in your website ranking).

I don't think that you should work on your Alexa ranking. You should build backlinks to get great SERP for your keywords... Meanwhile you will increase your Alexa ranking

Alexa is good to for basic trends and insights. I also use compete.com and google ad planner and see how the data compares.

It tells nothing about the performance of a site. It gives stats based only on their toolbar users. Alexa has no access to a sites stats and thus has no idea what visitors they get.

Alexa is mostly just a traffic indicator. It's a good way to evaluate overall visibility but I wouldn't use it for much else.

No it is useless as far as a traffic indicator because it can only count the toolbar users and not real traffic to your site. Alexa does have it's uses but a traffic indicator is not one of them.
Most sites ranked by Alexa has anywhere from 3 - 5 times the actual traffic Alexa says it does.

Care to share with us how Alexa tells what your traffic is and how your website performance is ??
Alexa has no way to tell what your website performance is or what kind of traffic you have. No 3rd party site is able to tell your traffic unless they have actual access to your servers raw access logs.
Alexa measures traffic for toolbar users and nothing more. They keywords they show are for toolbar users that use the Alexa search. Alexa has always been useless and always will be as far as traffic of a website.
With that said you can look at the keywords they display and you can optimize your website for some of those keywords. You can look at your traffic rank "according to alexa" for other countries and see if you need to optimize for those countries.
Course you can do the same exact thing with AWSTATS in your hosting control panel if your host uses AWSTATS. The big difference is your AWSTATS have access to your server where Alexa does not.
If you are basing your website performance on what Alexa says then no wonder your competition is kicking your ***.

That's the way it should be. Add fresh and original content, ignore what every else is doing and just do you. The profits, the rankings and the readers will all come eventually.

Alexa is an awesome free tool for several other reasons besides site traffic. Their stats allow you to see your competitors top 10 keywords for free! The Alexa back link checker is a nice tool as well. You can usually view a different set of links there that you wouldn't see using other back link checking tools.

That is not your competitors keywords, that is the keywords that "alexa toolbar users" search for using the alexa search.

Results shown by Alexa rank is not that accurate. it just show that whether your site traffic has increased or decreased. And if alexa high than previous then believe that your daily visits has been less and by getting more traffic to the site, you can improve the alexa rank.

Alexa can not track your site traffic, impossible! They have no access to your server no more than compete or the rest of those 3rd party stat sites.

I've heard this said elsewhere, and if it is true there must be some poorly informed advertisers out there.

I get interested advertisers asking for more up-to-date analynics data all the time. They don't really check my alexa ranking but it's still under 150,000 which means nothing to me anyway's.
I think this is a myth that still floating around online.
