When Do Backlinks Show?
Hi, I'm trying to find out how many backlinks are pointing to my site. I know I've put our site link in a few places, and I have an SEO company who is supposed to be posting backlinks as well. But when I check on Alexa only one link is shown and on BackLinkWatch.com it shows 0. When should I expect to see the links shown? Why aren't they shown immediately?
I'm just wanting to make sure our SEO company is posting links as promised and I also want to count and see how many I've done because i can't remember.
Any help is appreciated!

Backlinks are not shown immediately because googlebot takes time to crawl pages and if they are crawled then most of the times Google simple ignore them and don’t follow the links because of the low quality.
I use ‘Google webmaster tools’ to know how many back links my website have.

The backlinks might not show because who ever moderates the site where left hasn't approved them yet.
Did you not ask the SEO company to provide a report of where they left the links so you can verify they have done their job as promised?

There could be a number of variables why your backlinks aren't showing up.
As mentioned above, if they are comments, they might not even been approved yet. It also takes time for the search engines to pick them up. That depends on how regular they crawl that particular site. It could take a day, to month, or even more. It really depends on the crawling cycle of each site. Search engines may crawl daily, or hardly at all. It depends soley on that sites content and backlinks, on how often it gets crawled.
If you are dealing with a SEO Company, ask for print out of their work. If they can't provide one, dump them. Any good reliable SEO business, will do this automatically.

Thanks for everyone's reply. I understand a little better now. So far my SEO company has done a good job of keeping me informed about each step. We're only a month into the process and so I expect he'll be providing me his report for the backlinks shortly. So when he does I want to double-check his claims on my own.
Thanks everyone!

Yeah you usually have to wait a month or so before you can see your backlinks getting indexed and showing in those tools you are using.

I can't say about the calculation of alexa in showing your backlinks. But as backlinkwatch is concerned, it shows every new link in a few days. If you are seeing only one backlink there, then it is clear that the seo company you have hired, is not making links for your website. Inquire them about the status. There are many who cheat the clients.

You may want to ask your SEO company if they are pinging the sites they are placing the back links on. In my experience, doing so gets those pages indexed much quicker ... and the bots will pick up your link(s).

The tools you are using are some of the worst for discovering backlinks. You should use the likes of iBacklinkPRO or MajesticSEO, they provide much more current results.

Do you use google analytics for your site? If not so then start to use it. As google analytics will provide you the results that from where you have get the backlinks and from which site you have get the more benefit for your site.

See, some times third party tools behave in a buggy way.... So its better to trace your backlinks from 2-3 tool.
I believe, Google and Bing webmaster central the best way of tracking backlinks.
And be a little patient, backlinks takes some time to get indexed.

It will take a while, When your submitted links has been cache by Google. Then the stability of that links might consider as your back links.

If the site is being optimized for Google, then the only report that really matters is the one from GWT. Whatever other tools may find will not help with Google ranking if Google hasn't found them as well.

Backlinks enable you to keep track of other pages on the web that link to your posts.

Back links are not related with Google, third party software will show all the back links within few months.. So using backlinkwach not shown the bL means, the links are are not indexed

Alexa is not the appropriate tool to check the back links. Use Google webmaster tools to find the back links to your website (accurate in my view).

Don't worry to much about it, just keep building links...Google will crawl your links eventually.
