Page Rank doesn't matter, the exposure and traffic are the most important for a Press Release.

I think social media is playing vital role nowadays, and one can use them properly for getting the maximum benefit.
After Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn now it is turn of Pinterest. I would like to explore it as i haven't got any review of this site.

Do you think that is true for local businesses like mine as well? Traffic, outside a radius of about 20 miles doesn't really interest me.

Would paying for PR Web benefit me more than PR Log, which is free? Keeping the above in mind.

There are different local platforms you can use. Now going back to PR Log, it looks to me more like an article directory rather than a high traffic Press Release distributor.

Don't make me wrong, it is a good site, perhaps it will bring the same results as a good article directory.

In general a high traffic distributor will list the platform media where your Press Release will be submitted.

Social proof through social media, bookmarking is still relevant today. Private Blog Networks were popular for a while but recently got hit hard. Regardless of the type of links you build, make sure you diverse the backlinks. Type/IP diversity seems to be a huge factor in Google's algo today.

Social Media optimization will be more effective now a days. however, i am not sure about 2012 strategies (not even know about such in 2012). I am following same on-page, off-page methods. And just following Google webmaster quality guidelines.

People still do blackhat thinking they will make a killing but in the end they get banned and most likley ask why they lost there rankings on SEO forums like this.

Social media and blogging will do a lot of good to any SEO campaign this year. Also worth mentioning is the fast rising Pinterest but one should not forget about the search results integrated Google+.
